Player News
ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reports that the Cubs are calling up RHP Chris Flexen.
The Cubs signed Flexen in the off-season and changed his arm slot. The results have been great, with Flexen registering a 1.16 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 21:8 K:BB ratio in 23 1/3 innings at Triple-A. There’s been no announcement yet about his role, but Shota Imanaga left last night’s game with leg cramps, and Ben Brown got hit hard in his last start and could be destined for the bullpen.
Reds recalled 2B Tyler Callihan from Triple-A Louisville.
Callihan is hitting .303/.410/.528 with four homers and six steals in 24 games for Triple-A Louisville. He should operate as a bench bat with Jeimer Candelario now on the IL.
Reds placed 3B Jeimer Candelario on the 10-day injured list with a lumbar spine strain.
Candelario has been battling his back injury for a few weeks while playing sporadically. The Reds will now shut him down for a couple of weeks at least to see if that helps him heal up. Spencer Steer should continue to start regularly at first base with Noelvi Marte at third base. Gavin Lux and Austin Hays will mix in at DH in the immediate future as well.
Matt Shaw went 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored for Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday.
Shaw is now 6-for-10 in his last two games as he looks to find his footing and show the Cubs that he’s ready for another chance at MLB at-bats. It will probably take another couple of weeks of strong production from Shaw to force the Cubs’ hand, but he’s too talented to remain in Triple-A for too long.
Trevor Rogers (knee) allowed four runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings for Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday.
He also walked three and struck out two on the day. The Orioles could certainly use some reinforcements in their rotation, and getting Rogers back and healthy could be the answer to their problems. Unfortunately, Rogers hasn’t been good since coming to Baltimore and does not appear close to 100 percent right now.
Phillies RHP prospect Mick Abel allowed one run on four hits in six innings with six strikeouts and two walks for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Abel is off to a great start in Triple-A, registering a 2.88 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 36:13 K:BB ratio in 34 1/3 innings. After a rough 2024 season, it’s nice to see Abel demonstrate the skill that previously made him one of the top pitching prospects in baseball. With Ranger Suarez back from his injury, there is less of a chance for Abel to get a shot with the Phillies anytime soon.
