2025 Player Outlook
Trade rumors swirled around Cease throughout the offseason, but he remains atop the Padres rotation for now. He bounced back nicely from a down season on the southside of Chicago in 2023, as he posted a 3.47 ERA across 33 starts in his first season with the Friars. Cease recorded the lowest walk rate of his career at 8.5 percent, and the strikeout numbers were still in elite territory at 29.4 percent.

Dylan Cease pitched well in a no-decision against the Astros on Sunday night, piling up six strikeouts over five innings of two-run baseball.
The 29-year-old right-hander allowed six hits and one walk on the evening. All of the damage done against him came in his final inning of work as Mauricio Dubon delivered an RBI single and Yordan Alvarez added a sacrifice fly. Cease generated 14 swings and misses on 88 pitches on the evening — 10 of those on his slider — while registering a CSW of 28 percent. It was a nice bounce back effort for Cease who now holds an untenable 6.04 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and a 30/8 K/BB ratio over 25 1/3 innings through his first five starts. He’ll do battle against the Rays his next time out at home on Saturday.
Dylan Cease didn’t pick up a decision after firing 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs — two of them earned — against the Cubs on Monday.
Cease gave up seven hits, but the only runs he gave up came on a two-run homer by Michael Busch. The 29-year-old was able to generate a decent 14 swings-and-misses, and his seven punchouts ups his total to 25 over his first four starts of 2025 with an ERA of 6.64. Cease will take on the Astros on Sunday.
Dylan Cease was hit for nine runs over four innings in a loss to the Athletics on Tuesday.
Cease just didn’t have it on Tuesday despite being spotted three runs to start the game. The Athletics hung six runs on him on six hits and a walk in the first inning. Cease didn’t get his first swing-and-miss until his 26th pitch, striking out the leadoff man to end the frame as the A’s hit around the order. The A’s brought three more runs in to score in the third on a walk and three more hits. The 29-year-old right-hander will look to put this start in the rear view mirror when he takes on the Cubs in San Diego on Monday.
Dylan Cease recorded seven strikeouts and allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings on Wednesday in a win over the Guardians.
