Clay Holmes pitched six innings of one-run ball Sunday against the Cardinals.
Holmes, who benefitted from Brandon Nimmo robbing Jordan Walker of a solo homer, struck out six before leaving with a two-run lead. Alas, that lead disappeared in the seventh. The Mets went on to win anyway, but Holmes remained 2-1 with a 3.16 ERA. He’ll face the Nationals next weekend.
Clay Holmes notched a win over the Twins with five innings of one-run ball Monday.
Holmes allowed two hits, walked two and struck out eight. He’s been too inefficient to pitch deep into games thus far, but he’s 2-1 with a 3.66 ERA and the Mets have won three of his four starts. He’ll face the Cardinals next.
Clay Holmes struck out 10 and got a win despite giving up four runs in 5 1/3 innings Tuesday against the Marlins.
Two singles and two walks produced two runs against Holmes in the first. The other runs came after he left the game with two on and one out in the sixth. The four innings in between that were great, as Holmes faced just one batter over the minimum. It’s his second win as a big-league starter; the other came as a 25-year-old rookie for the Pirates on July 14, 2018. He’ll face the Twins next.
Clay Holmes was charged with two runs – one earned – over 4 2/3 innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Marlins.
Holmes dealt with plenty of traffic on the basepaths but managed to hold the Marlins to just a pair of runs, striking out six and only handing out a pair of free passes in the process. The concerning variable here is that he generated only six swinging strikes with his six-pitch mix on 85 pitches (55 strikes). The reliever-turned-starter has allowed five runs – three earned – with a 10/6 K/BB ratio across 9 1/3 innings in a pair of starts to open the year. It’s too early in the year for fantasy managers to panic, but Holmes hasn’t exactly dominated coming out of the gate. He’s in line for a rematch against the Marlins on Tuesday at Citi Field.
