Ryan had the same line as Clay Holmes — they even both had eight strikeouts and two walks — but he was left with a no-decision and Holmes got the win after the Mets took a lead in the top of the sixth. Ryan’s sweeper was ridiculously effective tonight, accounting for seven whiffs, 13 strikes and one ball the 14 times he threw it. He might need to mix that in more frequently against the Braves on Sunday.

Ryan struck out four and walked none on the day while registering a 21 percent whiff rate and 29 percent CSW. Ryan saw his velocity tick up slightly on all of his pitches, which is nice to see from a health standpoint, but he continues to struggle to find a reliable secondary pitch to complement his four-seam fastball. Today his splitter had just two whiffs on 14 swings while posting a 14 percent whiff rate and 24 percent CSW. His slider was almost two mph harder today and had a 50 percent CSW on 10 pitches, but it also got hit hard. It’s a situation to continue monitoring, but you’re certainly not mad at the results today. He’ll face the Mets next time out.

The 28-year-old right-hander struck out six opposing hitters on the afternoon and did not allow a base on balls. The Astros got him for a pair of solo home runs in the second inning from Christian Walker and Jeremy Pena, then Ryan allowed a two-run single to Brendan Rodgers in the fourth inning that barely squeezed through a drawn in infield. Ryan got 10 whiffs on 83 pitches on the day, registering a CSW of 31 percent. He’ll carry a 4.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and an 11/0 K/BB ratio into Wednesday’s matchup against the Royals in Kansas City.

Ryan let up a run on a pair of hits in the first inning. He bounced back in the second frame, striking out the side. He’d go on to complete five innings of one-run ball on 81 pitches, 55 for strikes. He struck out five while generating seven whiffs. The 28-year-old right-hander’s velocity was sitting at 93 mph, still down a tick from last season but notably higher than his spring training readings and perhaps a good sign going forward. Ryan is lined up for a start against the Astros in Minnesota on Thursday.
