2025 Player Outlook
Fantasy managers were hoping for ace-like numbers in 2024, and most should have been happy with Ragans last season. He was one of 13 qualified starters to pitch at least 185 IP last season, and he posted an 11-9 record with a 3.14 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and the fifth most strikeouts in baseball (223). At the end of the day, Ragans was one of just five starters with a sub-3.20 ERA and 200+ strikeouts. Expect a bunch more strikeouts again in 2025, as Ragans has back-to-back seasons with an 83rd percentile or better whiff rate. The Kansas City southpaw is capable of headlining your fantasy rotation and should win 12-15 games with an ERA in the lower threes, a 1.20-ish WHIP, and 200+ strikeouts.
Player News
Cole Ragans allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out 10 in 7 2/3 innings in a win over the Guardians on Sunday.
Ragans didn’t walk a single batter while registering an absurd 41 percent whiff rate and 38 percent CSW. His four-seam and changeup led the assault today, with his changeup getting eight whiffs on 11 swings. The left-hander has lowered his arm angle this season, presumably to pitch more comfortably, but that has also helped him add a little bit more movement on most of his offerings. It’s helped so far this season, and he’ll now take a 2.28 ERA into a start in Detroit next week.
Cole Ragans delivered a dominant performance in a no-decision against the Twins on Tuesday night, racking up a season-high 11 strikeouts over six innings of one-run baseball.
Ragans scattered four hits on the evening and didn’t walk a batter. The lone tally against him came on an RBI single by Harrison Bader in the fifth inning that Mark Canha should have caught in left field. The 27-year-old southpaw amassed 18 swings and misses on 96 pitches in the game — nine of those on his changeup — while registering an elite CSW of 41 percent. While he’s still winless on the season, Ragans has compiled a strong 2.81 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and a 24/4 K/BB ratio over 16 innings through his first three starts. He’ll look to get in the win column when he takes on the Guardians in Cleveland on Sunday.
Cole Ragans fanned 10 over five innings of one-run baseball but didn’t factor into the decision Wednesday against the Brewers.
It was a terrific pitching matchup between Ragans and Freddy Peralta, and unfortunately neither picked up a deserved win. The stat might be flawed. Ragans allowed a solo homer to Jackson Chourio in the first, but from that point on he silenced the Milwaukee lineup while inducing an impressive 19 swings and misses on 97 pitches. Ragans struggled in the opener against the Guardians, but this was much more in line with how he’s pitched over the last two-plus seasons. He’s a must-start Tuesday against the Twins.
Cole Ragans wasn’t at his best in a no-decision against the Guardians on Opening Day on Thursday, surrendering three runs on five hits over his five-plus innings of work.
The 27-year-old southpaw struck out just three batters on the afternoon while issuing a pair of walks. He kept the Guardians off the board through the first three innings, but they scratched out single runs on sacrifice flies in the fourth and fifth inning. Ragans then returned for the sixth where he exited after allowing a leadoff single — and that runner immediately scored against the bullpen. Ragans got 10 swings and misses on 83 pitches on the day — five on his changeup — while posting a CSW of 25 percent. He’ll look to get back on track when he takes on the Brewers in Milwaukee on Wednesday.
