2024 Player Outlook
2023 Recap: Burnes got off to a slow start and while it was clear that his dominance was clearly fading, by season’s end he was still one of baseball’s best pitchers. The good: he threw 193 innings, posted a 1.069 WHIP, and struck out 200 batters (third straight season with at least 200 strikeouts). The concerns: his average velocity, though still very good, decreased last season. Depending on the pitch, like his slider for instance, it was a 2 MPH drop. His K% was still above average at 25.5, but it was 36.7 in 2020 and has decreased for a third straight season. Burnes’ 3.39 ERA was his highest since the 2019 season and it has increased in each of the past three seasons.
2024 Outlook: Burnes’ trade to the Orioles seems to have come at the right time. With Camden Yards now a pitchers park maybe Burnes can reverse the downward trend in some of his key stats and with the Orioles being perennial contenders these days Burnes may be able to surpass his 2022 career high 12-win total.
