Coby Mayo

Mayo has gone deep three times over his last four games and has recorded at least one hit in eight of his previous nine contests since April 5. The 23-year-old top prospect doesn’t have much, if anything, left to prove at the Triple-A level. However, there’s no indication that the Orioles are ready to give him another look at the highest level right now. He remains a top-10 range prospect for dynasty purposes until further notice.

Mayo had a poor start to the season after expressing frustration following his demotion to Triple-A; however, he is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak in which he has gone 9-for-25 (.360) with two home runs, eight RBI, and a 7:6 K:BB ratio. If he keeps hitting like this, he’ll force the Orioles to either find a spot for him or trade him for an established pitcher.

There’s some serious prospect fatigue going on here as Mayo seemingly languishes at the Triple-A level after flopping last season in his first chance at the highest level. The 23-year-old third baseman remains an elite dynasty prospect until further notice, but the excitement level among fantasy managers has certainly declined, especially since Mayo is hitting just .213 (10-for-47) with two homers and a 15/8 K/BB ratio through 13 games at Triple-A Norfolk.

It was Mayo’s first home run of the season as the 23-year-old hopes to keep his momentum from the final weeks of spring training going. He had gone 7-for-19 in his last eight spring training games and appears to be the next man up if any of the Orioles’ infielders should get hurt. However, with Gunnar Henderson close to returning to Baltimore’s lineup, there is yet another obstacle in Mayo’s path and the Orioles have not seemed to feel any urgency to make playing time for Mayo over the last year.
