We are clear! Let’s have a great night of baseball!
MLB DFS Lineup Construction Thoughts
With the opening slate of the second half being a Coors Field slate, that’s where we’re going to start. How much viability is there to stacking either the Giants or the Rockies? Kyle Harrison takes the mound for the Giants while Cal Quantrill takes the hill for Colorado.
Once you figure out if you’re using or fading Coors, there are elite pitching options at each tier, mostly in the mid-tier. You don’t HAVE to spend all the way up, although Gerrit Cole is my favorite arm up there when you have Hunter Brown, Sean Manaea, and Luis Castillo in the mid-tier.
Recommended MLB DFS Starting Pitchers
Top Options For Strikeouts
- Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees - 7.5 (+125)
- Hunter Brown, Houston Astros - 6.5 (-160)
- Nick Pivetta, Boston Red Sox - 6.5 (+150)
Best Odds For A Win
- Michael Wacha, Kansas City Royals (-205) vs. Chicago White Sox
- Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees (-170) vs. Tampa Bay Rays
- Kyle Harrison, San Francisco Giants (-148) vs. Colorado Rockies
Core MLB DFS Pitchers
Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees
The final start before the break was the most Gerrit Cole has looked like himself since returning from his preseason injury. He fired six innings of one-run baseball while striking out seven Orioles and that is definitely a confidence builder. Now at just $9K against the Rays, a team that struggles against righties and strikes out a lot, Cole is primed for a second consecutive big game.
Hunter Brown, Houston Astros
Everything lines up today for Hunter Brown. This is the absolute BEST park to pitch in and he’ll take his near 50% groundball rate and 25% K-rate into Seattle against the team striking out against right-handed pitching more than anyone else. He’s had ONE bad start since May and everything else has been dominant. Elite pitching environment, elite pitching matchup, and in great form. Brown checks ALL the boxes today.
Michael Wacha, Kansas City Royals
Even with Luis Robert playing well, Eloy Jimenez healthy, and the White Sox whole as team, they’ve been awful. Over the last 30 days, they rank 29th in OPS and wOBA and 30th in ISO and wRC+ against right-handed pitching. They’re also striking out 23.9% of the time during that span. Wacha has been very solid this season and has the best odds on the board to pick up a win and it’s by a large margin.
Sean Manaea, New York Mets
I will submit that Miami has improved over the last month against left-handed pitching. I will also say they went from 30th to 24th in OPS, lol. Still way worse than league average. Still a team OPS of .669 with a .124 ISO. They’re still striking out 24.4% of the time, which ranks 10th in baseball. Since June 14th, Manaea has pitched to a 2.02 ERA, held his opponents to a .164 AVG, and has a robust 25.9% K-rate. That’s his numbers the last six starts. He should continue to roll here.
JP Sears, Oakland Athletics
Let’s sit on this for a second. The Angels, who were one of the best teams in baseball earlier in the year against left-handed pitching have done a 180 a stink against them now. Over the last month, the Angels are last in OPS, wOBA, AVG, OBP, SLG, and wRC+ while striking out over 25% of the time. JP Sears comes into this game amid his best stretch to date, firing three straight really good outings that resulted in 15+ DKP, 6+ Ks, 5+ IP, and 3 ER or fewer. He’s cheap, pitching in a really good ballpark, and has an elite matchup.
Recommended MLB DFS Hitters
Highest Expected Run Totals
- San Francisco Giants - 5.9
- Kansas City Royals - 5.4
- Colorado Rockies - 4.9
- Los Angeles Dodgers - 4.7
Core MLB DFS Hitters
Bobby Witt, Kansas City Royals
Although all the data backs lefties against Chris Flexen, righties have gotten a little unlucky against him. He still has elevated flyball and hard-hit rates against righties and Witt is elite against all splits. Witt, over the last 30 days, has a .930 OPS, .269 ISO, and .389 wOBA against righties.
Matt Chapman, Michael Conforto, Mike Yastrzemski, San Francisco Giants
Amongst all the Giants players over the last month, few have been better than Yastrzemski, Conforto, and Chapman against right-handed pitching. Yastrzemski has an OPS north of 1.000, Conforto has a .907 OPS and .280 ISO, and Chapman has a .841 OPS and .222 ISO. They now all get to feast in Coors Field.
Brenton Doyle, Ezequiel Tovar, Michael Toglia, Colorado Rockies
The Rockies are the contrarian side of this game stack and I absolutely love them here. They have three guys over the last month against left-handed pitching absolutely mashing in Doyle, Tovar, and Toglia. Toglia has an .882 SLG%, .618 ISO, and .485 wOBA, Doyle's at .345 AVG, .724 SLG%, .379 ISO, and Tovar isn't too far behind at a .951 OPS, .250 ISO, and .409 wOBA. They face Kyle Harrison who's been light years worse on the road this year and now has to pitch in Coors Field.
Francisco Alvarez, New York Mets
I will continue to tout Francisco Alvarez against right-handed pitching until he gives me a reason not to. Over the past month, Alvarez has posted a 1.094 OPS, .292 ISO, and .458 wOBA against righty hurlers. Righties have given Edward Cabrera fits as they've hit .283 with a .830 OPS against them.
Alec Burleson, Brendan Donovan, St. Louis Cardinals
The numbers for both of these dudes over the last month against right-handed pitching are fantastic. Burleson has slashed .391/.423/.783 with a .391 ISO and .494 wOBA while Donovan is hitting .386 with an OPS just shy of 1.000. Lefties are giving Spencer Schwellenbach issues this year and both guys are too cheap.
Lawrence Butler, Jacob Wilson, Seth Brown, Oakland Athletics
I wasn't sure we'd make it here against righties – we know how good they are against lefties – but man Oakland provides some solid value today. Lefties have really crushed Griffin Canning posting a .288/.358/.517 slash along with a .374 wOBA, and 1.93 HR/9. That's where Butler and Brown check in. Butler has a .912 OPS and .365 wOBA against righties over the last month while Brown, although a very small sample, has a 1.350 OPS. I threw Wilson in here as he'll be making his major league debut at just 3.5K on DK and he's hit at EVERY level he's played at, and this will be no different.

Player News
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that Zach Eflin (lat) is likely to return and start Sunday against the Angels
It was assumed that Eflin would be back this weekend, but now we have a concrete date. The 31-year-old may not be at full strength after throwing fewer than 60 pitches in his rehab start, but the Orioles feel confident enough to have the right-hander back on the bump for the series finale against the Angels.
Riley Greene is not in the lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Rockies on Thursday.
Greene will get a break and likely return to the lineup for the second game of the twin-billing. Zach McKinstry will get the start in left field while Greene rests.
Yu Darvish (elbow) is facing live hitters on Thursday.
Darvish has been throwing bullpen sessions and traveled to the team’s complex in Arizona to face live hitters on Thursday. It will be his first time facing live batters since a spring training appearance on March 13th. He will likely need a few sessions like this before the Padres can map out a rehab appearance timeline for him.
Adael Amador is starting at second base and batting ninth for the Rockies on Thursday.
Amador has now started three of the last four games at second base for the Rockies. He’s gone just 7-for-43 this season with 15 strikeouts in 16 games. He’s just 22 years old, so there is plenty of time for him to adjust to the MLB level, but he doesn’t need to be on redraft radars right now.
Jackson Holliday is playing second base and batting second for the Orioles on Thursday against the Twins.
With Cedric Mullins sitting out on Thursday, Gunnar Henderson will bat lead off, and Holliday will jump up from sixth in the order to second. Holliday is riding a hot streak right now, and the Orioles are taking advantage. This is likely just a one-game sample with no Mullins or Adley Rutschman in the lineup, but Rutschman has been struggling, so perhaps it could become a more permanent spot in the lineup for Holliday moving forward.
Endy Rodriguez (finger) had his splint removed this week.
Rodriguez suffered a lacerated right index finger on April 14th. Now that he is out of his splint, he “is playing catch and doing a slightly modified swing.” Once he can progress to taking full swings, we’ll have a better sense of the timeline for his return.
