2025 Player Outlook

Wacha had his best season as a professional since his 2015 campaign as a member of the Cardinals. He compiled a 13-8 record with a 3.35 ERA (3.65 FIP), 21.2 K%, and 1.19 WHIP across 166.2 IP for the Royals in 2024, earning himself a nice little payday this offseason. His 3.78 ERA on the road couldn't touch his 2.89 ERA at home, and he turned it on in the second half, posting a 2.79 ERA over his final 77.1 IP in 2024. His .290 BABIP was his highest in the past three seasons, and as a pitch-to-contact guy, it's hard to envision his strikeout rate getting much higher than where it has been the last few seasons. At this point of his career, Wacha is what he is, but he can be serviceable for fantasy managers as a back-end rotation arm (think SP6/SP7).

Wacha struck out four batters on the night and didn’t allow a base on balls. He shut the Yankees out through the first five innings, but showed some cracks in the armor in the sixth inning as he issued two straight two-out walks to load the bases. That forced manager Matt Quatraro to turn to his bullpen — who would allow all three of the inherited runners to score. Wacha got nine swings and misses on 80 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 29 percent. Now 0-3 on the season, Wacha will try once again to earn his first victory as he brings a 4.35 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 15/10 K/BB ratio (20 2/3 innings) into Sunday’s matchup against the Tigers in Motown.

Wacha worked a clean first inning, then gave up a pair of runs on a walk and two hits in the second. He worked three more scoreless innings before leaving with two runners on and two outs in the sixth. Both inherited runners would come in to score. The 33-year-old right-hander will look to bounce back against the Twins in Kansas City on Thursday.
