Dolphins vs. Seahawks Predictions, Picks & Odds: NFL Week 3, Sunday 9/22

There is a reason the NFL has so many rules to protect the quarterback. It’s far and away the most important position in football. And losing your starting quarterback, the way the Miami Dolphins lost Tua Tagovailoa to a concussion last week, can have a devastating effect.
That said, there have been some incredible NFL stories that have come from backups taking over. We wouldn’t have gotten Tom Brady if Drew Bledsoe didn’t puncture a lung. The miracle career of Kurt Warner is another. We’re not saying Skylar Thompson is the next Tom Brady here. But we can still have some fun football without the starting QB. Possibly even more fun - like Joe Flacco showed us last year.

Dolphins vs. Seahawks Predictions For NFL Week 3, Sunday 9/22
The Miami Dolphins aren’t the only ones dealing with injuries here either. The Seahawks have been missing some starters in early practice this week like Kenneth Walker, Laken Tomlinson, Boye Mafe, Jerome Baker, and Uchenna Nwosu. And that’s just the players who missed on Wednesday - the list of limited players is even longer.
Obviously not every injury is created equally here - as we mentioned in the intro. But both these teams will likely be gluing it together a bit this week so let’s take a look at what each team brings to the table and how it might shake out.
Miami Dolphins: The Skylar Thompson Show
We’ve seen some BAD situations at quarterback in recent years. I watched guys like Kendall Hinton and Christian McCaffrey play quarterback in NFL games. Malik Willis was thrown into a game in Week One after being with the Packers for a week and a half. Skylar Thomson has been with the team for three years now and has started multiple games during that span. So not quite as drastic.
They also got some good news on the injury front as Pro Bowl caliber left tackle Terron Armstead returned to practice today. The passing game relies on pre-snap motion and getting the ball out quickly - Tua was actually leading all starting QBs in average time to throw. The run game relies on bruisers like Terron Armstead and Alec Ingold.
The Dolphins lost a lot of key pieces on defense this offseason like star lineman Christian Wilkins. Their defense is fairly healthy, and Jalen Ramsey should be a tough matchup for DK Metcalf but it’s not exactly a unit that can carry them to wins.
Seattle Seahawks: The Ryan Grubb Era
The Ryan Grubb era has begun in Seattle and, so far, we like what we see. Shane Waldron’s offense last year used a rotation of tight ends and left a lot to be desired - especially from rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba. He played a partial snap share and finished last season with only 628 yards despite being a first round pick.
The moment they brought Grubb in, the Seahawks showed how serious they were about his 11-personnel offense by letting both Will Dissly and Colby Parkinson walk in free agency. Much like Sean McVay’s Rams, they prefer to use the same 11 guys as much as possible with DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Noah Fant, and Kenneth Walker. With Walker out last week, Zach Charbonnett stepped in and played 96% of the snaps.
The Seahawks defense hasn’t really been tested yet going up against the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots. But, when healthy, they are likely in the top half of the league at least given how many rough defenses there are out there. Tariq Woolen has especially been a problem for opposing wide receivers - on 9 targets he’s only allowed his man 31 total yards in two games, per Pro Football Focus.

Dolphins vs. Seahawks Predictions: Dolphins -4.5 (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook)
This might sound crazy to some. But I trust the SYSTEM that Mike McDaniel runs. It’s the same quarterback friendly one we see in San Francisco where it relies on motion and getting the ball to your stars quickly in space. And the Miami Dolphins certainly still have stars with Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and De'Von Achane.
Now, we’re not saying that Tua Tagovailoa is a system quarterback by any means. He’s incredible at running this system. But they really don’t ask him to do a whole lot himself - hence the league leading 2.31 second time to release. If Hill, Waddle, and Achane can get to their spots, I think Skylar Thompson is serviceable enough to put the ball in the right spots.
If the Seahawks were a fully healthy team, this might be a different story for us. But, when you look at the injury report below, things are looking kind of grim right now in Seattle. Seattle can certainly still win this game, but I’ll take the points this week with Miami -4.5 (-110 at BetMGM) in my Dolphins vs. Seahawks predictions.

Player News
Dolphins signed No. 13 overall pick DT Kenneth Grant to a four-year contract.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Grant will sign his contract today. The former Michigan defensive tackle is expected to fill a major void left by Christian Wilkins, who left for the Raiders in the 2024 offseason. Grant totaled 32 tackles, three sacks, and seven TFLs in his final season at Michigan and excelled at stopping the run while also generating 27 pressures in his final season, per PFF.
Beat reporter John Hendrix reports that free agent WR Donovan Peoples-Jones is among the 16 players that the Saints will host for their rookie minicamp.
Peoples-Jones last played regular season snaps with the Lions back in 2023, when he caught 13-of-24 targets for 155 yards. He is highly unlikely to return to fantasy relevance at this point but could perhaps sign on as a special teams contributor.
Titans signed fourth-round pick WR Elic Ayomanor to a four-year contract.
Ayomanor will now begin learning behind Calvin Ridley. Although Ayomanor is unlikely to find a meaningful role in year one, dynasty managers should note his status as training camp gets underway this summer. The former Stanford receiver flashed big-play ability in his two college seasons.
Buccaneers signed seventh-round pick WR Tez Johnson to a four-year contract.
Johnson will serve as a rotational deep-threat option for Baker Mayfield. His thin frame (5'10/154) simply does not lend itself to the repeated hits one incurs in a full-time role. Johnson did earn 100-plus targets in his two seasons at Oregon, though. His big-play style make him a better fit in best ball for now, pending any major on-field breakthroughs.
Giants waived DT Casey Rogers.
Rogers was a 2024 undrafted free agent and logged 33 defensive snaps for the Giants in his rookie season. He is credited with zero tackles and/or sacks. He may find his way onto another roster as a practice squad option.
Vikings signed third-round pick WR Tai Felton to a four-year contract.
Felton is quietly in play to challenge Vikings No. 3 WR Jalen Nailor in training camp. Nailor (5'11/190) caught 28-of-42 targets for 414 yards and six touchdowns in his first season as a starter last year, with the latter category buoying his fantasy productivity. Felton (6'1/183), meanwhile, caught 96-of-143 targets for 1,119 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging 2.32 yards per route run in his final college season. Fantasy managers should monitor Felton’s training camp reports this summer, as he could have a matchup-based WR5 role if everything falls into place.
