MLB DFS Picks & Playbook For Today’s Games: Saturday, June 22

Published: Jun 22, 2024
Welcome to another day of MLB DFS here at Fantasy Alarm. We get a great 8-game early slate on DraftKings kicking off at 4:05 PM EST.
This slate is full of elite pitchers, with the top-priced option being Zack Wheeler against the Arizona Diamondbacks. There is no Coors Field on this slate and the weather is looking good for all eight games which is a plus. With the Dodgers and Braves not playing on this slate, the Phillies are my favorite team to stack.

MLB Weather: Today, 6/22
Arizona Diamondbacks vs Philadelphia Phillies
There is a chance for rain showers with the possibility of a delay, but this game is expected to play.
MLB DFS Lineup Construction Thoughts
There is no shortage of arms on this slate and with eight games, you can pretty much go in any direction. My favorite arm will be Logan Gilbert in an excellent matchup against Miami, but I still do like Zack Wheeler despite the tougher matchup.
Offensively, my favorite stack is going to be the Phillies. Tommy Henry is not a pitcher I put a lot of stock into and even the top-priced left-handed hitters on the Phillies crush lefties so he might be in for a tough day. Outside of the Phillies, I am very interested in the Red Sox, Twins, and some Mariners.
Recommended MLB DFS Starting Pitchers
Top Options for Strikeouts
- Zack Wheeler (6.5 Ks -130) vs Arizona Diamondbacks
- Bailey Ober (6.5 Ks -105) vs Oakland Athletics
- Corbin Burnes (6.5 Ks +110) vs Houston Astros
- Logan Gilbert (6.5 Ks +120) vs Miami Marlins
Best Odds for a Win
Core MLB DFS Pitchers
Zack Wheeler, Philadelphia Phillies
Zack Wheeler is the most expensive arm on the board but he comes with the best odds for a win with Tommy Henry on the opposing mound. He’s coming off his worst start of the year against Baltimore where he gave up eight runs, but outside of two starts this year he’s been fantastic. He holds a 2.84 ERA on the year and has gone seven innings in four of his last five starts before his last game. The Diamondbacks have been heating up but Wheeler has been consistently dominant this season.
Logan Gilbert, Seattle Mariners
Logan Gilbert has been unbelievable this year, and Miami is the perfect matchup for him. The Marlins rank 28th in wOBA, 28th in OPS, and 26th in wRC+ while holding a modest 21.8% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. Gilbert is fresh off his best start of the season where he only allowed two hits through eight scoreless innings on nine strikeouts against the Rangers and he should be a very popular pitcher in this spot.
Bailey Ober, Minnesota Twins
Bailer Ober is in a great spot here against an Oakland team that ranks 25th in both wOBA and OPS against right-handed pitching. The A’s also have the 2nd highest strikeout rate at 26.6% while batting just .223 as a team. Ober did run into a tough stretch of games but his last outing was this exact matchup a week ago and he only allowed one run while striking out eight. Oakland does have some sneaky power in that lineup but I have no issue going right back to Ober in this spot.
Nick Pivetta, Boston Red Sox
Nick Pivetta is coming off a couple of tough starts where he only struck out four in each, but those teams are near the bottom of the league in strikeout rate. The Reds, however, rank third with a 26.3% strikeout rate against righties while sitting at 26th in wOBA and OPS. He’s had a problem keeping the ball in the park, averaging 1.69 HR/9, which could be problematic with this game being played in Cincinnati, but the strikeout appeal is there.
Recommended MLB DFS Hitters
Highest Expected Run Totals

- Boston Red Sox (5.0)
- Cleveland Guardians (5.0)
- Cincinnati Reds (4.7)

Note: Will Be Updated as Official Starting Lineups Are Released
Trea Turner, SS, Kyle Schwarber, OF, Philadelphia Phillies
With Tommy Henry on the mound for Arizona, you can essentially play anyone on the Phillies, but my two favorites are Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber. Turner hit a home run on Friday and Schwarber has three in his last five games. On the season, Schwarber is hitting .339 with a .983 OPS and .202 ISO against lefties and Tommy Henry is allowing 1.82 HR/9 while being beaten up by both splits. The big Phillies bats are all expensive so you may have to pick and choose which way to stack, but they are all in play.
Royce Lewis, 3B, Minnesota Twins
This guy should just be on the cover and a core play on every single slate for the rest of the season. Royce Lewis hit yet another home run on Friday, his fifth in six games. It’s a small sample size, but he’s currently hitting .500 with a .500 ISO against lefties and JP Sears has allowed 10 home runs to righties on the season.
Willi Castro, OF, Minnesota Twins
Over his last 10 games, Willi Castro is hitting .390 with a 1.152 OPS, two home runs, and a steal. Through his last five games, he’s recorded six doubles and six RBIs and he comes at a very fair price tag. His .409 wOBA and .940 OPS against left-handed pitching on the season put him in another great spot to produce against JP Sears.
Anthony Santander, OF, Baltimore Orioles
This guy is on an absolute tear right now, with six home runs and 14 RBIs over his last 10 games. He leads all of baseball in June with 11 home runs and is coming off back-to-back games with a homer. Ronel Blanco is on the mound which makes this a tougher matchup, but Santander has been on fire and his price tag has not moved. As good as Blanco has been, he has allowed a home run in eight of his last 10 games and the Baltimore offense could make things very difficult for him.

Player News
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that Zach Eflin (lat) is likely to return and start Sunday against the Angels
It was assumed that Eflin would be back this weekend, but now we have a concrete date. The 31-year-old may not be at full strength after throwing fewer than 60 pitches in his rehab start, but the Orioles feel confident enough to have the right-hander back on the bump for the series finale against the Angels.
Riley Greene is not in the lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Rockies on Thursday.
Greene will get a break and likely return to the lineup for the second game of the twin-billing. Zach McKinstry will get the start in left field while Greene rests.
Yu Darvish (elbow) is facing live hitters on Thursday.
Darvish has been throwing bullpen sessions and traveled to the team’s complex in Arizona to face live hitters on Thursday. It will be his first time facing live batters since a spring training appearance on March 13th. He will likely need a few sessions like this before the Padres can map out a rehab appearance timeline for him.
Adael Amador is starting at second base and batting ninth for the Rockies on Thursday.
Amador has now started three of the last four games at second base for the Rockies. He’s gone just 7-for-43 this season with 15 strikeouts in 16 games. He’s just 22 years old, so there is plenty of time for him to adjust to the MLB level, but he doesn’t need to be on redraft radars right now.
Jackson Holliday is playing second base and batting second for the Orioles on Thursday against the Twins.
With Cedric Mullins sitting out on Thursday, Gunnar Henderson will bat lead off, and Holliday will jump up from sixth in the order to second. Holliday is riding a hot streak right now, and the Orioles are taking advantage. This is likely just a one-game sample with no Mullins or Adley Rutschman in the lineup, but Rutschman has been struggling, so perhaps it could become a more permanent spot in the lineup for Holliday moving forward.
Endy Rodriguez (finger) had his splint removed this week.
Rodriguez suffered a lacerated right index finger on April 14th. Now that he is out of his splint, he “is playing catch and doing a slightly modified swing.” Once he can progress to taking full swings, we’ll have a better sense of the timeline for his return.
