We’re in week five of the 2023 MLB season and this week’s injury report features a few catchers that are hurt right now. The Miami Marlins are dealing with a few injured pitchers with sore arms. After seeing the Tampa Bay Rays lose Jeffrey Springs to Tommy John surgery, the Kansas City Royals have a starting pitcher that is going under the knife and will miss the remainder of the season. The Detroit Tigers are also dealing with a few banged-up players and the Milwaukee Brewers will be without one of their outfielders for a long time. Here are the latest MLB injuries for week five of the fantasy baseball season.

2023 Fantasy Baseball MLB Injury Report Week 5

Updated: April 28

MLB Injury Updates Hitters

Kris Bryant OF Colorado Rockies (Back)

Back in action.

Garrett Mitchell OF Milwaukee Brewers (Shoulder)

Mitchell injured his shoulder badly and it isn’t looking like we’ll see him back on the field anytime soon and shoulder surgery is currently on the table. He wants to ask a few more doctors about the severity of his injured shoulder before making an official decision, but it wouldn’t be surprising seeing a report come out about his season being over. Joey Wiemer will continue starting in center field and Blake Perkins will see time in the field filling in as well.

Logan O’Hoppe C Los Angeles Angels (Shoulder)

O’Hoppe’s season is very much in jeopardy after tearing his shoulder. He has a small chance of returning for the final few weeks of the season but it’s bleak. Matt Thaiss and Chad Wallach will split time filling in for O’Hoppe and we don’t know when we’ll see Max Stassi back on the field.

Javier Baez SS Detroit Tigers (Finger)

Baez has a sore hand but he doesn't have any major damage and he could potentially play in the Tigers next game after sitting out for their last contest.

Kerry Carpenter OF Detroit Tigers (Shoulder)

Carpenter may be looking at time on the shelf after hurting his shoulder. It would be surprising seeing him in the Tigers lineup this weekend. Matt Vierling could see the field more with Carpenter out.

Mitch Garver C Texas Rangers (Knee)

It’s been a few weeks since Garver has played, and we were told a few days ago that he’ll need around another month for his knee to recover. Jonah Heim and Sandy Leon are available to fill in behind the plate until Garver is ready to return. This timetable could be backed up if his recovery is slow.

Josh Jung 3B Texas Rangers (Hand)

Jung missed his last game after getting hit in the hand by a pitch but the pain has already seemed to subside and he could be back for the Rangers next game.

Travis Jankowski OF Texas Rangers (Hip)

Jankowski sat out his last game with a sore hip and we'll have to see if he's able to return to action in the Rangers next game. Josh Smith and Bubba Thompson are other outfield options for Texas.

Aaron Judge OF New York Yankees (Hip)

Judge has a sore hip and it looks like he'll need a few days to rest and recover. If he is out, the Yankees will fill the void with the combination of Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Oswaldo Cabrera and Franchy Cordero.

Yordan Alvarez OF Houston Astros (Neck)

Alvarez has had a stiff neck for most of the week and missed his last three games. The Astros were just off and we'll have to see if the extra day of rest has helped him recover but it's uncertain when he'll retake the field. Corey Julks and Jake Meyers will continue filling in for the other injured outfielders.

George Springer OF Toronto Blue Jays (Hand)

Springer has a swollen hand after getting beaned by a pitch and we'll have to see if he ends up missing any time as the Blue Jays were off on Thursday. Tests revealed no major damage to his hand and he's day-to-day.

J.D. Martinez Util Los Angeles Dodgers (Back)

Martinez is experiencing soreness in his back and we haven't seen him on the field in almost a week. The Dodgers have used multiple players to fill in at DH while Martinez has been out. Chris Taylor and Trayce Thompson could be looking at more playing time.

Will Smith C Los Angeles Dodgers (Concussion)

Smith should return to the Dodgers lineup over the next couple of days according to recent reports. Austin Barnes was filling in behind the plate.

Salvador Perez C Kansas City Royals (Back)

Perez is day-to-day with a sore back, but he should be ready to return to the Royals lineup in the next day or two. MJ Melendez can fill in if needed.

Wil Myers OF Cincinnati Reds (Illness)

Myers is sick and we need more details from the Reds but he may have COVID-19 and is looking at a few more games being out of action as he has landed on a short-term injured list.

Austin Hays OF Baltimore Orioles (Hand)

Hays has missed a couple of games with a sore hand and if he needs more time for his hand to recover, Ryan McKenna can help fill in.

Yu Chang 1B Boston Red Sox (Wrist)

Chang has a fractured bone in his wrist and it's looking like he'll be on the shelf for at least a month, possibly longer. Enrique Hernandez will continue filling in for him at shortstop.

Joey Bart C San Francisco Giants (Groin)

Bart's groin continues to bother him and it wouldn't be surprising to see him land on the injured list. Blake Sabol will start behind the plate until Bart is healthy.

Francisco Alvarez C New York Mets (Head)

The Mets will be careful with Alvarez after taking a few hits to the head in the Mets last game. If Alvarez needs to sit for a game, Tomas Nido will catch.

MLB Injury Updates Pitchers

Sandy Alcantara SP Miami Marlins (Arm)

Back in action.

Trevor Rogers SP Miami Marlins (Arm)

Rogers was put on the injured list a couple of days ago with arm soreness and we don’t know when he’ll be back on the field, but he’ll be out of the rotation for at least the next two weeks.

Kris Bubic SP Kansas City Royals (Elbow)

Bubic’s season is over as he will have Tommy John surgery on his elbow. He ends his season with 16 innings pitched with a 3.94 earned run average and 16 strikeouts. Ryan Yarbrough started a few days ago and we’ll have to see if he will continue to start in Bubic’s place.

Michael Grove SP Los Angeles Dodgers (Groin)

Grove was put on the injured list with a strained groin and he’ll miss the next few weeks of action. Tony Gonsolin is just about ready to return to the field and he could end up starting in Grove’s place in the Dodgers rotation this week.

Dany Jimenez RP Oakland Athletics (Shoulder)

With just one save for the season and a badly strained shoulder, Jimenez was placed on the 60-day injured list and he’ll be out of action for a long time. Jeurys Familia could be in line for more save opportunities with other Athletics relievers off the field.

Trey Wingenter RP Detroit Tigers (Shoulder)

Wingenter has a sore shoulder and he’ll miss the next few weeks of baseball games as he was put on the injured list. He’s surrendered four earned runs in fewer than five innings pitched this season.

Robbie Ray SP Seattle Mariners (Elbow)

Ray has an injured tendon in his elbow and he will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery. We'll have to see if the Mariners make a move to get another pitcher. Marco Gonzales and Chris Flexen are currently in the rotation with Luis Castillo, Logan Gilbert and George Kirby.

Chris Bassitt SP Toronto Blue Jays (Back)

Bassitt tweaked his back in his last start, but reports indicate that he should be ok and shouldn't have to miss any time for the Blue Jays.

Adam Cimber RP Toronto Blue Jays (Back)

Cimber has an injured back and the Blue Jays put him on the injured list earlier in the week and we'll have to see if the timeline is extended depending on how badly his back is strained.

Tyler Mahle SP Minnesota Twins (Elbow)

Being taken out of a start because of a sore elbow is never a good thing and hopefully, Mahle's elbow doesn't swell up over the next day or he could be looking at a stint on the injured list. He lasted four innings on Thursday before being removed.

German Marquez SP Colorado Rockies (Arm)

Marquez left his last start with a sore arm and some of his muscles are causing him pain and we're waiting on more test results to see what the damage is exactly to his arm but it wouldn't be surprising seeing him put on the injured list in the next day.

Taijuan Walker SP Philadelphia Phillies (Arm)

Walker had to leave his last start with a sore arm and early reports are telling us that his arm isn't damaged and he's just waiting for the pain to go away. It is possible that Walker's next start isn't skipped in the Phillies rotation.

Matt Bush P Milwaukee Brewers (Shoulder)

Bush is dealing with a very sore shoulder and the Brewers put him on the injured list earlier in the week and he'll miss the next few weeks of action.
