Zach McKinstry has been added to the American League roster for next week’s MLB All-Star Game.
McKinstry will replace injured Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña on the junior circuit’s roster. The versatile 30-year-old has been a key component for the American League-leading Tigers during the first half, hitting .283/.357/.460 with 48 runs scored, seven homers, 27 RBI and 13 steals over 84 games. This will be his first career All-Star Game selection.
Angels selected the contract of RHP Carson Fulmer from Triple-A Salt Lake.
Fulmer rejoins Los Angeles’ relief mix ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Rangers after latching on with the club earlier this month. The 31-year-old righty made a career-high 37 appearances (eight starts) last season for the Angels. He’ll operate in a versatile swingman-type role out of the bullpen.
Angels optioned LHP Sam Aldegheri to Double-A Rocket City.
Aldegheri, one of the better pitching prospects in Los Angeles’ system, was hung out to dry in mop-up duty during Tuesday’s blowout loss at the hands of the division-rival Rangers as the Angels continue to be one of the more bewildering organizations in the sport. The 23-year-old southpaw will head back to the minors to continue his development.
Angels transferred RHP Hunter Strickland to the 60-day injured list.
The procedural move opens up a spot on Los Angeles’ 40-man roster for reliever Carson Fulmer. The 36-year-old veteran hit the shelf earlier this week with right shoulder inflammation and will be sidelined into early September. There’s a strong chance his season is over.
Athletics activated INF/OF Miguel Andujar from the 10-day injured list.
Andujar returns to the Athletics’ outfield mix with top prospect Colby Thomas heading back to the minors prior to Wednesday’s showdown against Atlanta. The 30-year-old wound up missing five weeks recovering from a right oblique strain.
Athletics optioned OF Colby Thomas to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Thomas started just two of seven games for the Athletics after being called up last week. He went 1-for-11 with six strikeouts during his first taste of the majors. The 24-year-old’s power/speed combination is going to make him an impact fantasy contributor at some point down the line, but there simply isn’t a spot for him at the highest level right this second.
