Naturally, most rivalries will be within your division. But there have been times when rivalries develop within the conference as well. For instance, the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals have made headlines as of late. And the New England Patriots were often at odds with whatever horse team Peyton Manning was on at the time. Because of the schedule algorithm and playoff bracket, good teams find themselves playing each other fairly often.

This “rivalry” has been a bit one-sided in favor of the Seahawks. But the Lions have developed into a fairly complete team which makes our Week 4 Monday Night Football Seahawks vs. Lions predictions more difficult than ever. Can the undefeated Seahawks walk into Detroit and take another one this week? Or will the Lions defend their home turf under the lights?

Seahawks vs. Lions Predictions For Monday 8:15 PM ET, NFL Week 4

These teams have played in each of the last two seasons and both matchups were good ones. In 2022 the Seahawks got the best of the Lions 48-45 and last year, the Seahawks won 37-31 in overtime. In fact, if you go back further in history, the Seahawks have actually beaten the Lions in 6 straight matchups and 9 of the last 10. The one time the Lions did win was a 28-24 victory in 2012, over a decade ago.

But, as we know, every year is a new year and every team is a new team. This time around, the Lions are the favorites. Can they turn the tide of this head-to-head rivalry or can Seattle continue their dominance over Detroit?

Seattle Seahawks: The Ryan Grubb Era

The Seattle Seahawks under former offensive coordinator Shane Waldron had a strange identity. They seemed hesitant to lean into their star players, utilizing rotations of wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs. They decided to move on from Waldron and find someone that appeals more to the personnel they have.

In comes Ryan Grubb from Washington, who thrived with 11 personnel - Rome Odunze, Ja’Lynn Polk, and Jalen McMillan were all drafted in the first three rounds of the NFL draft. They ditched the Shane Waldron tight end rotation of Colby Parkinson and Will Dissly. They are using far more three WR sets with DK Metcalf, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Tyler Lockett. And they committed to Kenneth Walker (until he got hurt, at which point Zach Chabonnett has been playing over 95% of the snaps in both games).

The Seahawks defense has been a pleasant surprise. So far they are ranked first in DVOA against the pass and third in DVOA against the rush, per FTN Fantasy. A big part of that has been the stellar play of Tariq Woolen and Julian Love in the secondary and the pressure created up front by the likes of Boye Mafe.

Detroit Lions: A More Balanced Approach

The Lions of recent years have been gunslinging - and not necessarily by choice. The offense has been great, but the defense hasn’t been holding up their end of the deal, finishing 32nd, 31st, 28th, and 25th over the last four years in the NFL. After a couple offseasons focusing on that side of the ball, they are currently 9th in both points allowed and DVOA through three games.

And the team in general isn’t just more balanced - the offense has become more balanced as well. At one point the game plan was just to force the ball to Amon-Ra St. Brown every play. And though that is still on the table (like it was in Week Two), they now have multiple legitimate threats on this team.

Jameson Williams has emerged as more than just a boom/bust field stretcher. He has a full route tree this year to compliment ARSB. Sam LaPorta has had a slow start with some injury issues, but we know what he’s capable of. And the 1-2 punch of David Montgomery on run downs and Jahmyr Gibbs on pass downs behind a tremendous offensive line creates one of the top backfields in the league.

Seahawks vs. Lions: Seattle Seahawks +3.5 (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

It hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows for this Detroit Lions team. The key issues for them so far has been at the cornerback position. Carlton Davis III through three games has let up the most yardage of any cornerback in the league with 224 yards, per Pro Football Focus. Meanwhile, rookie Terrion Arnold on the other side leads defensive players in penalties with some asking whether he should be benched.

Sure the Seahawks have some concerns about the offensive line so they’ll need to get the ball out quick with Aiden Hutchinson coming for them. Using Pharaoh Brown at tight end at times over Noah Fant should help with that. DK Metcalf has been a monster as of late so these outside corners are in big trouble if Geno does have any time at all to throw. And the Lions have allowed huge days out of the slot to Cooper Kupp and Chris Godwin. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is in line for a decent day as well.

I personally believe this game is closer to a toss-up. And maybe I’d pick the Lions to win if this were a straight “pick ‘em”. But the Seahawks are getting three and the hook here at a reasonable price so I’ll take the points on this one. I might sprinkle the money line as well as I think the Seahawks could make it 10 wins out of the last 11 here.
