Lions coach Dan Campbell said the team doesn’t expect to have Alim McNeill (knee) back for training camp “or probably even the early part of the season.”
The Week 15 ACL tear for McNeill will cut into his 2025 season as well, which isn’t surprising. McNeill is probably aiming for an October or November return at this point. The Lions will run out a trio of D.J. Reader, Levi Onwuzurike, and Roy Lopez in the interior until McNeill is cleared to return.
Lions GM Brad Holmes said that if Hendon Hooker wants to be the No. 2 quarterback, “then win the No. 2 quarterback job.”
It’s not exactly a glowing endorsement of the behind-the-scenes development from Hooker. The 2023 third-round pick appeared in three games in which the Lions scored 49 or more points last season, completing 6-of-9 passes for 62 yards. It sounds like Kyle Allen (and potentially Jake Fromm) will push him for No. 2 duties this offseason.
Lions GM Brad Holmes said he expects the team to exercise Jameson Williams’ fifth-year extension.
Williams overcame disappointing 2022 and 2023 campaigns to finally put together a strong season in 2024. The former first-round pick caught 58 passes for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 17.3 YPR — the fourth-highest YPR amongst receivers with 50 or more targets. Williams will have a chance to duplicate that success next season and can then play out the 2026 season on his fifth-year option if the Lions prefer to see a bit more out of him before signing him to a long-term deal. Williams is an explosive playmaker who turned in six top-24 PPR performances last season. As long as he continues to share the field with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta, Williams will likely remain a boom-or-bust fantasy option.
Lions re-signed OG Kayode Awosika to a contract.
This will be Awosika’s third season in Detroit. He serves as a trusted, if middling, backup for the team’s interior offensive line group. Awosika earned a career-best 59.4 PFF pass-blocking grade last year.
