MLB DFS Picks, Projections, Lineups & Stacks Today: Sunday Playbook

Published: Sep 22, 2024
With so many playoff implications, today's MLB action should be outstanding.
We'll look at DraftKings and FanDuel's early 11-game main slate, and I'll share my favorite MLB DFS picks, including must-plays and value plays using various MLB DFS projections.
Let's have a day!
MLB September Daily Fantasy Playbook Today, September 22nd
MLB Weather Today, 9/22
A late start is possible, but it looks like this game will play without any in-game issues.
There could be some storms in the late afternoon, but for now, the game is expected to play fully without issues. Still, there could be a late rain delay.
There was a lot of heavier rain earlier in the day, so it's more likely we'll get a late start on this game. Watch this game closely if you have any MLB DFS picks you like.
MLB DFS Optimizer & Lineup Generator Today
Below is my mock MLB DFS lineup for DraftKings. With my MLB DFS picks below, I was able to add many of my favorite players for today's slate in this lineup.
We fit Blake Snell, Yordan Alvarez, Riley Greene, and Kerry Carpenter. We also added Matt Olson, who I think will have a monster day.
And so do the MLB DFS projections.

MLB DFS Lineup Picks: Starting Pitchers
Top Options For Strikeouts
- Blake Snell (6.5, -155) vs. Kansas City Royals
- Spencer Arrighetti (6.5, -150) vs. Los Angeles Angels
- Paul Skenes (6.5, -145) vs. Cincinnati Reds
- Andrew Heaney (5.5, -130) vs. Seattle Mariners
- Bryan Woo (5.5, -115) vs. Texas Rangers
- Frankie Montas (5.5, -110) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
Best Odds For A Win
- Spencer Arrighetti (-105) vs. Los Angeles Angels
- Bryan Woo (+110) vs. Texas Rangers
- Frankie Montas (155) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
MLB DFS Lineups: Core MLB DFS Pitchers
Blake Snell, San Diego Padres
Blake Snell has struck out 38.5% of batters over the last 30 days. While his walks are high, he's still held his last 91 batters to a .051 ISO and wOBA of .223 over the previous month.
Snell has also induced nearly 49% of ground balls and has added 18% of swinging strikes with only a 4.7% barrel percentage allowed.
If he can limit the walks, that would be ideal.
Today, it looks like he can. He'll face a Royals lineup that has only walked 7.4% of the time over the last 30 days against lefties. Six of those nine batters have walked below 6% of the time.
That's good news for Snell.
Paul Skenes, Pittsburgh Pirates
Paul Skenes has struck out 31.1% of batters over the last 30 days. He's also held his last 90 batters to a .024 ISO and wOBA of .250 while inducing 60% of ground balls.
Beyond that, the NL Rookie of the Year candidate has allowed only 12.7% of fly balls in the last 30 days and has given up just a 3.6% barrel percentage.
Skenes will face a Reds lineup that doesn't strike out much. However, the lineup has still hit just a .139 ISO with more than 20% of strikeouts.
Skenes may not be one of the best MLB DFS plays as a pitcher, but according to many MLB DFS projections, he could certainly have a dominant start.
He wouldn't be my first choice, but you can if you'd rather go with Skenes over Snell to save some salary.
Seth Lugo, Kansas City Royals
I wouldn't recommend playing Snell and Seth Lugo. But you'd have to consider backing Lugo if you're not in on Snell.
Lugo has struck out 23.4% of batters over the last 30 days. He's also held hisprevioust 128 batters to a .125 ISO and has earned more than 48% of ground balls.
Meanwhile, he's allowed just 33% of hard contact and has allowed only 23.1% of fly balls.
He'll face a Giants lineup that has struck out 27% of the time against righties over the last 30 days. This projected lineup for the Giants has also hit just a .298 ISO against righties and has walked just 7.1% of the time.
Consider Lugo as long as you're not playing Snell.
Gavin Williams, Cleveland Guardians
Gavin Williams is anattractiveg low-tier option.
Williams has struck out 24.7% of batters over the last 30 days. He's also held his last 97 batters to a .143 ISO and wOBA of .292. You'd like to see Williams get deeper in games overall.
He's taking on a Cardinals lineup that has hit just a .139 ISO and wOBA of .299 against righties in the last 30 days.
The lineup should have at least four lefties, which he's been much better against. Meanwhile, the five righties in the St. Louis lineup have struck out 25.2% of the time against righties over the last month.
Williams would certainly be one of the high-reward type of MLB DFS plays if you're willing to pull the trigger.
MLB DFS Lineup Picks: Hitters
Highest Expected Run Totals
- Atlanta Braves (5.5, +110) vs. Miami Marlins
- Houston Astros (4.5, -135) vs. Los Angeles Angels
- Chicago Cubs (4.5, -105) vs. Washington Nationals
MLB DFS Lineups: Core MLB DFS Hitters
Parker Meadows, Kerry Carpenter, OF, Riley Green, OF, Detroit Tigers
The Baltimore Orioles will pitch Albert Suarez today. Suarez is a right-handed pitcher who has allowed a .220 ISO and wOBA of .404 to his last 58 lefties.
He's also struck lefties out just 15.5% of the time and has allowed 38.1% of fly balls to lefties over the last 30 days.
In addition, he's given up an 11.9% barrel percentage and has induced below 35% of ground balls.
Therefore, you'll want to consider the raging hot lefties in the Detroit order.
Over the last 30 days against righties:
Parker Meadows: .192 IS0, .320 wOBA
Kerry Carpenter: .237 ISO, .414 wOBA
Riley Greene: .227 ISO, .391 wOBA
These three lefties can absolutely destroy Suarez today.
Matt Olson, 1B, Atlanta Braves
Matt Olson has smashed a .313 ISO and wOBA of .454 against righties over the last 30 days.
With the Braves desperately needing a win today, Olson must deliver.
Olson will face Marlins' righty, Darren McCaughan, who has given up a .240 ISO and wOBA of .390 to the first 81 left-handed batters this season. He's also given up 41.5% of fly balls, with only 27.7% of ground balls induced.
Beyond that, over the last 30 days, McCaughan has allowed a 10% barrel percentage and has earned just an 8.2% swinging strike.
Take Olson at first base today.
Yordan Alvarez, OF, Kyle Tucker, OF, Jon Singleton, 1B, Jason Heyward, OF, Houston Astros
The Astros are projected to score the second-most runs in today's main slate. They'll face off against Griffin Canning of the Angels, who has allowed a .155 ISO and wOBA of .336 to his last 98 batters.
While he's limited power to lefties over the last month, Canning has allowed a .204 ISO and wOBA of .359 to 369 lefties. The more significant sample size shows the bigger picture.
He'll have to face four incredibly tough left-handed batters today.
Over the last 30 days, check out what these left-handed hitters have done to righties.
Yordan Alvarez: .279 ISO, .358 wOBA
Kyle Tucker: .389 ISO, .521 wOBA
Jon Singleton: .238 ISO, .389 wOBA
Jason Heyward: .233 ISO, .371 wOBA
You'll want to consider these MLB DFS plays and stack them with today's slate. The Astros' MLB DFS projections are super high, and the expectation is that they Will dominate today.

Player News
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that Zach Eflin (lat) is likely to return and start Sunday against the Angels
It was assumed that Eflin would be back this weekend, but now we have a concrete date. The 31-year-old may not be at full strength after throwing fewer than 60 pitches in his rehab start, but the Orioles feel confident enough to have the right-hander back on the bump for the series finale against the Angels.
Riley Greene is not in the lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Rockies on Thursday.
Greene will get a break and likely return to the lineup for the second game of the twin-billing. Zach McKinstry will get the start in left field while Greene rests.
Yu Darvish (elbow) is facing live hitters on Thursday.
Darvish has been throwing bullpen sessions and traveled to the team’s complex in Arizona to face live hitters on Thursday. It will be his first time facing live batters since a spring training appearance on March 13th. He will likely need a few sessions like this before the Padres can map out a rehab appearance timeline for him.
Adael Amador is starting at second base and batting ninth for the Rockies on Thursday.
Amador has now started three of the last four games at second base for the Rockies. He’s gone just 7-for-43 this season with 15 strikeouts in 16 games. He’s just 22 years old, so there is plenty of time for him to adjust to the MLB level, but he doesn’t need to be on redraft radars right now.
Jackson Holliday is playing second base and batting second for the Orioles on Thursday against the Twins.
With Cedric Mullins sitting out on Thursday, Gunnar Henderson will bat lead off, and Holliday will jump up from sixth in the order to second. Holliday is riding a hot streak right now, and the Orioles are taking advantage. This is likely just a one-game sample with no Mullins or Adley Rutschman in the lineup, but Rutschman has been struggling, so perhaps it could become a more permanent spot in the lineup for Holliday moving forward.
Endy Rodriguez (finger) had his splint removed this week.
Rodriguez suffered a lacerated right index finger on April 14th. Now that he is out of his splint, he “is playing catch and doing a slightly modified swing.” Once he can progress to taking full swings, we’ll have a better sense of the timeline for his return.
