2025 Player Outlook
Lugo nearly has as many pitches in his arsenal as he had wins last year! In what was a career year for the veteran right-hander, he went 16-9 with a 3.00 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and career high 206.2 IP. Of course, when pitchers have big innings jump from one season to the next, there's always a little bit of worry the year following the big jump. However, dating back to 2022, Lugo's innings have jumped from 65, to 146.1, to 206.2! His numbers last year were carried by a stronger first "half" of the year, but he was still more than respectable after the All-Star Break (3.84 ERA, 1.09 WHIP). His ERA will be closer to 4.00 than 3.00 this year, but he should win double-digit games with a sub-1.20 WHIP and strikeout rate in the low-twenties. He isn't the most glamorous SP3 (15-teamers) or SP4 (12-teamers), and even with some statistical regression in terms of his ERA, he should remain productive and provide your team with solid ratios.
Player News
Seth Lugo yielded three runs over six innings Sunday in a loss to the Red Sox.
The four hardest-hit balls of the game all came off Lugo, and they resulted in two homers and two singles. With five strikeouts and no walks, Lugo still managed to turn in a fifth straight quality start. However, it wasn’t enough to prevent him from dropping to 3-4 with a 3.02 ERA. He’ll face the Cardinals next.
Seth Lugo pitched well in a no-decision against the White Sox on Tuesday, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits across his 6 2/3 innings.
The 35-year-old right-hander walked three and struck out three opposing hitters on the evening. The White Sox scratched out a run on an RBI single by Brooks Baldwin in the fourth inning, then they added an unearned run on a throwing error made by Jonathan India in the sixth. Lugo got five swings and misses on 98 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 23 percent. He’ll look to get back in the win column as he carries a 2.84 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and a 37/15 K/BB ratio (50 2/3 innings) into Sunday’s showdown against the Red Sox.
Seth Lugo went six innings and allowed two runs while picking up a win over the Rays on Thursday.
Lugo gave up a leadoff homer to Yandy Diaz, but then didn’t give up another run until the sixth on an RBI single from Jonathan Aranda. He scattered five hits, and he didn’t walk anyone while punching out five. It’s another solid effort from the 35-year-old, and at least over the first month of the season, he’s shown that his 2024 campaign was no fluke. Lugo has a very friendly matchup next week against the White Sox, and he’ll take a 3.07 ERA into that contest.
Seth Lugo pitched three-hit ball for eight innings Friday in the Royals’ 2-0 shutout of the Astros.
Lugo struck out eight and walked one. The Astros actually had the nine hardest-hit balls of this game, all off of Lugo, but they produced two singles and eight outs (the hardest of all was a double-play ball). It’s some much-needed good fortune for the Royals and Lugo, who came into the day 1-3 with a 3.90 ERA. Lugo will take on the Rays next week.
