MLB Injury Report Update Ahead of This Weekend's Games
While Kodai Senga and Cole Ragans hit the injured list, the Milwaukee Brewers seemed to have avoided major injury with top pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski in his MLB debut. A return in 2025 for Shane McClanahan is coming into significant question, and Aaron Nola is currently shut down from throwing. MLB Injury Report Update: Pitchers
Kodai Senga, New York Mets - Hamstring
Senga will head to the IL with a hamstring strain, and there’s no clear timetable yet for return.
Cole Ragans, Kansas City Royals - Groin
Ragans has battled a couple of things this year, but now he’s on the IL with a left rotator cuff strain. A second opinion is coming, and remember, you only really get a second opinion if you don’t like the first one…
Jacob Misiorowski, Milwaukee Brewers - Ankle
Misiorowski’s excellent debut ended on a weird note, when he rolled his ankle after throwing a pitch. Fortunately, he seems fine!
Shane McClanahan, Tampa Bay Rays - Triceps
It was reported that McClanahan was in “kind of a shutdown mode,” which is certainly not ideal. The next step is a visit with a nerve specialist, and I’m growing weary on a 2025 return for the Tampa Bay southpaw.
Pablo Lopez, Minnesota Twins - Shoulder
More of a formality here, cause he’s going to miss a significant amount of time, but Lopez was placed on the 60-day IL. He’s eligible to return on August 3.
Sean Manaea, New York Mets - Oblique
Manaea worked up to 46 pitches in his last rehab start, and the next is scheduled for Sunday, June 15.
Jackson Jobe, Detroit Tigers - Elbow
The young Detroit righty will have season-ending Tommy John surgery, ending his 2025 campaign after just 49 IP. His absence will extend well into the 2026 season.
Aaron Nola, Philadelphia Phillies - Rib/Ankle
Nola won’t throw for at least another week and a half or so, and there will need to be a ramp up from there. Mick Abel figures to remain in the rotation while Nola is on the shelf.
Porter Hodge, Chicago Cubs - Hip
Hodge is heading out on a rehab assignment, and he’ll likely need a couple of appearances before being activated. The Cubs could go with a three-headed monster in the ninth inning upon Hodges’ return, along with Ryan Pressly and Daniel Palencia.
MLB Injury Report Update: Hitters
Yordan Alvarez, Houston Astros - Hand
Alvarez’s hand is reportedly at 80%, which is good progress, I would say!
Jacob Wilson, Athletics - Hamstring
Wilson has been dealing with some hamstring tightness, and he hasn’t played since June 9. However, the team is hopeful Wilson will get back in the lineup soon.
Brendan Donovan, St. Louis Cardinals - Toe
Another toe injury! Like I said on the Caught Sealing podcast, it’s a bad year to be a toe… I digress. The hope is that he can avoid an IL stint, but consider him day-to-day at this juncture.
Jazz Chisholm, New York Yankees - Groin
Chisholm is dealing with some groin tightness, and while he didn’t play on Thursday, it was reported that he was available off the bench. Let’s call him day-to-day, but it doesn’t seem like an IL stint is likely.
Giancarlo Stanton, New York Yankees - Elbows
An activation from the IL seems imminent for Stanton who has slashed .273/.333/.364 through 11 minor league ABs. It will be interesting to see the lineup shuffling the Yankees do to get Stanton in the lineup.
Matt Chapman, San Francisco Giants - Hand
Chapman is dealing with a bone bruise and ligament strains in his fingers. This sounds like a multi-week absence for Chapman.
Wilyer Abreu, Boston Red Sox - Oblique
The team expects Abreu to be activated when first eligible (June 20th), but that seems really fast for an oblique strain…
Player News
Chris Sale (rib) will make another minor league rehab start for Triple-A Gwinnett.
Sale will get another start in the minors to continue building up his pitch count and stamina after completing four frames on Sunday in his second rehab outing. There’s little incentive for Atlanta to rush him back since they’re no longer in playoff contention. The 36-year-old fantasy ace has been out since late June with a fracture in his left rib cage.
Bryce Miller (elbow) will be activated from the injured list to start on Tuesday against the Phillies.
Miller will take the ball for Tuesday’s showdown against the Phillies in his first major-league start since June 6. The 26-year-old has been plagued by persistent elbow issues this season, which have resulted in a pair of injured list stints and limited him to just 10 starts. He’s looked sharp in a handful of rehab outings at Triple-A Tacoma and shouldn’t have any limitations from a workload standpoint.
Cardinals recalled INF José Fermín from Triple-A Memphis.
Fermín returns to the big leagues prior to Monday’s series opener against the Marlins with Brendan Donovan landing on the injured list with a groin strain. The 26-year-old infielder has gone 7-for-20 with one homer and one steal in 12 games this season at the highest level.
Cardinals placed INF/OF Brendan Donovan on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 15, with a left groin strain.
Donovan finally lands on the injured list after being held out of the lineup in seven of the club’s last nine games due to ongoing groin and foot issues. The versatile 28-year-old has had a phenomenal season, hitting .279/.348/.402 with 57 runs scored, nine homers, 45 RBI and three steals in 110 games. He’ll get some extra time off to put the issues to bed. His absence opens the door for rookie Thomas Saggese to continue playing regularly at the keystone.
Athletics released INF Gio Urshela.
Urshela was cut loose late Sunday after passing through waivers unclaimed. The 33-year-old veteran infielder batted .238/.287/.326 with zero homers in 197 plate appearances over 59 games this season for the upstart Athletics. He’ll likely have to settle for a minor league contract if he’s going to latch on elsewhere.
Tyler O’Neill (wrist) has resumed baseball activities.
O’Neill has been plagued by injuries this season in his Orioles debut, which have limited him to just 43 games. It sounds like there’s optimism he’ll be ready at some point in September. He’s been on the injured list since early August dealing with right wrist inflammation.
