Futures Fantasy Baseball: Owning Minor Leaguer Ballplayers
“What are you looking at, butthead?”
Yeah, that is what Biff Tannen says to Marty McFly in Back to the Future. Like Marty McFly, minor leaguers are young, innocent and just want to get to where the excitement is. Back to the Future is the story of a teenager born to a family of misfits: a drunk mother, wimpy father, lazy brother and obnoxious sister. All he has is his music, his girlfriend and his relationship with Dr. Emmett Brown, a crazy scientist who invented a time machine using, well, a DeLorean. A series of wacky events sends Marty back to the year 1955 where he meets the younger Dr. Emmett Brown and does everything to get “back to the future”.
Well, that is all the minor league players want, to get to the future.
This weekend I was thinking about all these minor leaguers. Like many of you, yesterday I had my last draft of the season. I couldn’t have AJ Reed or Blake Snell because I needed major leaguers on my roster. HATED IT. On Saturday, I had the honor of drafting with Glenn Colton in the NFBC Main Event. We looked late to draft Trea Turner as he has game changing speed. However, we couldn’t draft Lucas Giolito, Tyler Glasnow or Jesse Winkler. HATED IT.
“Now, if my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles an hour, you're going to see some serious shit!”
Here comes some serious shit. There is a game called Future’s Fantasy Baseball that allows you to select the Minor League players every week. You can play all your favorites every week and win swag of your favorite teams. It is a COMPLETELY FREE game. So, here is how it works and how easy it is to play.
When you get to the site and sign up. It sends you to a screen with the selection of your roster. At each of ten positions, you select a single player by clicking on the + sign to expand to see the available players. If you want more detail on any player, you can go to the Players tab on the top of the page and on any player click on the arrow to the right to read more about that player. The Latest News on all the players is available.
Best part for me is that there are only calculations if you want there to be. You don’t have to do any quantum physics or calculus to play, learn more about the minors and have more fun with the games.
“My name is Darth Vader. I am an extraterrestrial from the planet Vulcan!”
Well, sometimes that is how I feel when I get too excited about these games. So, if you don’t want to not play alone, I’ll fly with you. I created a league for everyone to play in:
So get in the game.
So, quickly, back to the movie for a second. Spoiler alert. In the end, when Marty has met, sorta dated and kissed his own mother. Then, got a chance to play in the band and set everything right again in the future. He leaps into the DeLorean. Cranks it up to 88 miles an hour and shoots back to the future to 1985. Funny thing is that I was 21 in the year 1985, enamored with baseball and especially the minor leaguers who would be called up and play. It is a crying shame that there was no cool game like this so I could keep in touch with the prospects and learn more about the FUTURE STARS. I wanted to own players like: Vince Coleman, Lenny Dykstra, Cecil Fielder or even Jose Canseco.
So be glad that we have this now and get in the game. Looking forward to kicking you in the gigawatts.
"So, why don't you make like a tree and get outta here?"
