METS REACH WORLD SERIES

The Mets swept the Cubs 4-0 to reach the World Series. It will be their first trip to the finale since 2000 when they lost to the Yankees in five games.

Amazing Daniel Murphy notes…

Murphy has homered in six straight playoff games. That’s an all-time playoff record.

Murphy hit a career-best 14 homers during the regular season.

He didn’t hit more than four homers in any month this season.

Murphy has hit a total of seven homers in the playoffs. The all-time record is eight by Barry Bonds 2002, Carlos Beltran 2004 and Nelson Cruz in 2011.

Murphy had a .254/.284/.349 slash line against lefties during the regular season. In the playoffs the marks are .421/.421/.895. He had one homer over 126 at-bats against lefties during the regular season. He has three homers against lefties in the playoffs.

Murphy had a 1.294 OPS in the NLCS. That’s the highest mark ever.

Murphy has 16 hits this postseason. He’s only had 12 swing and misses.

 

Michael Conforto is set to become the third player to have appeared in the Little League World Series, the College World Series and the MLB World Series. The other two are Ed Vosberg and Jason Varitek.

Yoenis Cespedes hurt his shoulder, not golfing as some people thought, but rather it sounds like the injury occurred when he was doing pushups. He is confident that he will be ready when the World Series starts. He has two homers, seven RBIs and six runs scored in nine games.

Bartolo Colon threw 1.1 scoreless innings to get the win in the series clincher. That effort allowed him to set a record as he went 14 years and 12 days between postseason victories. Wow.

Travis d’Arnaud has three homers and six RBIs.

Jacob deGrom has a 1.80 ERA, 1.00 WHIP with 27 strikeouts over three starts – all wins.

Jeurys Familia has five saves and has allowed two hits in 9.2 innings.

The Mets held the Cubs to a .164 batting average. That’s the lowest in NLCS history.

Jake Arrieta was 2-1 but with a 3.66 ERA. Much better than the effort from Jon Lester (0-2, 4.50 ERA though he did have a solid 1.07 WHIP). But neither was as terrible as Jason Hammel (14.54 ERA, 2.77 WHIP over just 4.1 innings in two starts). Hammel was catastrophically pathetic.

Dan Haren retired. Wish him great things in his next endeavors. He is seven years younger than Bartolo Colon.

Kyle Schwarber hit five homers and had eight RBIs in nine games. He is now the Cubs' all-time postseason homer leader. #shocking  All told, Schwarber hit 37 homers with 99 RBIs over 152 games (minors, regular season, playoffs).

Jorge Soler had a .474/.600/1.105 slash line with three homers and three doubles.

Finally, the Cubs lost their seventh straight games in the LCS, the second-longest mark ever (Red Sox lost 10 straight from 1988-99).

BLUE JAYS VS. ROYALS

Royals lead the series 3-2. Game 6 is Friday with Game 7 Saturday if necessary.

Johnny Cueto has a 7.88 ERA, Yordano Ventura is at 6.57 and Edinson Volquez is at 4.32. Not great work.

Alcides Escobar became the first player to start off four straight games with a hit. He is hitting .400 this postseason with nine runs scored, the same number of runs as Ben Zobrist.

Kelvin Herrera has 14 strikeouts in seven innings. He’s allowed one run.

Kendrys Morales has four homers and 10 RBIs. Eric Hosmer has only one homer but he also has 10 RBIs. The Royals have played 10 postseason games.

Salvador Perez has four homers and a .949 OPS.  

Marco Estrada had a 2.62 ERA over his last 20 starts in the regular season. He has a 2.33 ERA in the postseason with 15 strikeouts and just one walk over 19.1 playoff innings.

Roberto Osuna (0.00 ERA, 6 Ks in 7 IP) and Aaron Sanchez (1.23 ERA, 6 Ks, 7.1 IP) have been huge in the Jays pen.

David Price has made three appearances. He has a 7.02 ERA over 16.2 innings though he does have a 1.14 WHIP and 7.50 K/BB ratio. Price will start Game 6 Friday.

Troy Tulowitzki has three games with three RBIs. That’s the first time a Blue Jay has done that. Tulo has 11 RBIs in 10 games overall.

There are six Blue Jays with 10 hits. Remember, the team has played 10 games: Chris Colabello, Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and Ben Revere.
