MLB DFS Picks, Projections, Lineups & Stacks Today: Tuesday Playbook

Published: Aug 13, 2024
Welcome to Tuesday! We’ve got a great day of baseball in store for us. Some studs are taking the mound in Tarik Skubal, George Kirby, and Hunter Greene, and none of them are even on today’s main slate!
There are plenty of exciting players on today’s slate, though, and lots of opportunities for us to build more winning MLB DFS lineups based off of today's MLB DFS projections!
MLB DFS Picks & Daily Fantasy Playbook Today, August 13th
We have a nice 9-game slate that will begin at 7:10 PM ET on DraftKings and FanDuel. Even with those top pitchers going before our main slate, we still have some solid pitching options and plenty of exciting offense to look at today. With that said, let’s dive right into today’s playbook and all my favorite MLB DFS picks for the day.
MLB Weather Today, 8/13
Finally looks like we are getting a day without any weather concerns.
Today’s MLB DFS Lineup Optimizer & Generator
When looking ahead at MLB DFS projections for today, many of the best pitchers of the day, between Tarik Skubal, George Kirby, Hunter Greene, and Yusei Kikuchi, aren’t on today’s slate. This leaves us with Michael King as our top option, but I am good with that. I still really like the pitching options we have today. Outside of my favorites, I think Kevin Gausman and Paul Blackburn are intriguing options; I just don’t like them quite as much.
On the offensive side, we have some really good offenses in favorable matchups. My favorites of the day include the New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres, and the Texas Rangers.
Don't forget to use our MLB DFS Lineup Optimizer before finalizing your entries! Here's a sample from the lineup generator for today's games, featuring some of our top MLB DFS picks of the day:

MLB DFS Lineups: Core MLB DFS Pitchers
Michael King, San Diego Padres
Michael King is very rightfully your top-priced option on this slate, and you should be willing to pay that price for him. He has the best strikeout potential on the slate and one of the best chances for a win (the best if the Yankees play like they did yesterday against the White Sox).
His last outing against the Pirates wasn’t his best. He gave up 3 earned runs through 5 innings, but he still struck out 7. He also had over 25 fantasy points in his previous 3 outings. He gives you pretty much a guaranteed 6+ strikeouts with double-digit potential and is unlikely not to give you at least a decent line.
Nestor Cortes, New York Yankees
There is no denying it has been a rough go of it for Nestor Cortes. He has also had a stretch of some tough matchups, but the last outing of giving up 6 runs to the Angels off 9 hits and only 2 strikeouts was pretty bad. I hope for a bounce back today with him facing the Chicago White Sox, and the MLB DFS projections back that up.
We know he has a solid strikeout upside when he is pitching well, and he has still been solid at home this season (3.05 ERA) even after that last start. The Chicago White Sox are the worst team in all of baseball, and I trust him to come back and give us a solid outing against them here today. With limited pitching options, I think the upside is well worth the risk.
Eduardo Rodriguez, Arizona Diamondbacks
You are also taking some risk with Eduardo Rodriguez, but it is another risk I am willing to take in today's MLB DFS picks. He only had the one strikeout in his last outing, but it was against the Cleveland Guardians, and he still managed 5.2 innings and only gave up 3 runs. Don’t forget, he had no ramp-up. This wasn’t just his first start in the majors this season; it was his first start period.
Today, he gets the Rockies on the road. Given what he was able to do in his first outing back, I think we can see some great stuff out of him against the Rockies today, and I think we will get the strikeouts back in this outing.
MLB DFS Lineup Picks: Hitters
Highest Expected Run Totals
- New York Yankees vs. Jonathan Cannon
- Boston Red Sox vs. Jose Urena
- Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Austin Gomber
- Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Colin Rea
MLB DFS Lineups: Core MLB DFS Hitters
*Note: Will Be Updated As Official Starting Lineups Are Released
Josh Bell, 1B Arizona Diamondbacks
Josh Bell has continued to be fantastic since joining the Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks are one of my favorite stacks today going against Austin Gomber. It is a shame that Ketel Marte likely won’t be in the lineup as he is undergoing an MRI for his ankle; he would have been the top play against the lefty, but that doesn’t shy me away from the rest of this Diamondbacks offense.
Since joining Arizona, Josh Bell has slashed .304/.360/.674 with 4 homers. He has 3 straight 2-hit games with 3 doubles, 4 runs, and 3 RBIs. The production continues to be great from him as a really cheap first base option, so I am going to keep rolling with it.
Royce Lewis, 3B Minnesota Twins
Royce Lewis for under $5,000? Sign me up. Sure, he hasn’t been hitting a homer in every game anymore (though he did just homer yesterday), but please find a reason why his price should have dropped this far compared to the over $6,000 he was earlier in the season.
Seth Lugo continues to have a strong season but has also given up 17 runs over his last 5 starts. I think Lugo will still pitch solid today, and I don’t expect the Twins to blow him up, but he also doesn’t scare me enough to shy away from Royce Lewis at this price with the upside that he brings.
Corey Seager, SS Texas Rangers
Corey Seager is red-hot right now. He has 7 homers in his last 10 games and three straight 2-hit games. Today, he faces Kutter Crawford, who has been struggling really badly with the long ball, setting up for some nice MLB DFS projections regarding Seager. Crawford has given up 13 homers in his last 4 starts.
Considering Seager has homered in more games than he hasn’t over his last 10, I think he is a really good bet to go yard once again against Crawford today, even if he doesn’t think he can have a big game at the plate in this matchup as long as Kutter doesn’t just walk him every time up. I'll gladly lock him into my MLB DFS picks for Tuesday.
Jackson Merrill, OF San Diego Padres
Jackson Merril is turning into a start for the San Diego Padres. Sure, he is 0 for 7 over his last 2 games but even with that has a 1.116 OPS over his last 10. This is thanks to a 6-game hitting streak in the middle where he had 11 hits, including 4 homers, 2 doubles, a triple, 9 runs, 9 RBIS, and 2 steals. All of that in 6 games!
Luis L. Ortiz has been pitching decently for the Pirates, but I don’t feel he is a match for this Padres offense right now. The biggest struggle for Ortiz has been homers against lefties as well, with a 1.59 HR/9 against lefties this season. I think this is a great matchup for Merrill to jump back into what he did over those 6 games and give us great value in the outfield today.

Player News
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that Zach Eflin (lat) is likely to return and start Sunday against the Angels
It was assumed that Eflin would be back this weekend, but now we have a concrete date. The 31-year-old may not be at full strength after throwing fewer than 60 pitches in his rehab start, but the Orioles feel confident enough to have the right-hander back on the bump for the series finale against the Angels.
Riley Greene is not in the lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Rockies on Thursday.
Greene will get a break and likely return to the lineup for the second game of the twin-billing. Zach McKinstry will get the start in left field while Greene rests.
Yu Darvish (elbow) is facing live hitters on Thursday.
Darvish has been throwing bullpen sessions and traveled to the team’s complex in Arizona to face live hitters on Thursday. It will be his first time facing live batters since a spring training appearance on March 13th. He will likely need a few sessions like this before the Padres can map out a rehab appearance timeline for him.
Adael Amador is starting at second base and batting ninth for the Rockies on Thursday.
Amador has now started three of the last four games at second base for the Rockies. He’s gone just 7-for-43 this season with 15 strikeouts in 16 games. He’s just 22 years old, so there is plenty of time for him to adjust to the MLB level, but he doesn’t need to be on redraft radars right now.
Jackson Holliday is playing second base and batting second for the Orioles on Thursday against the Twins.
With Cedric Mullins sitting out on Thursday, Gunnar Henderson will bat lead off, and Holliday will jump up from sixth in the order to second. Holliday is riding a hot streak right now, and the Orioles are taking advantage. This is likely just a one-game sample with no Mullins or Adley Rutschman in the lineup, but Rutschman has been struggling, so perhaps it could become a more permanent spot in the lineup for Holliday moving forward.
Endy Rodriguez (finger) had his splint removed this week.
Rodriguez suffered a lacerated right index finger on April 14th. Now that he is out of his splint, he “is playing catch and doing a slightly modified swing.” Once he can progress to taking full swings, we’ll have a better sense of the timeline for his return.
