NHL DFS Playbook March 2nd: Top DraftKings and FanDuel Picks

Published: Mar 02, 2024
Welcome to Saturday’s 8-game NHL Slate. This slate has some solid games with the most exciting being the New York Rangers taking on the Toronto Maple Leafs. It should be a great game and it has added flavor as fans are hoping Matt Rempe and Ryan Reaves drop the gloves. The biggest favorites on the board are the Dallas Stars who host the San Jose Sharks. You can build daily fantasy hockey lineups on DraftKings, FanDuel, and Yahoo Fantasy for Thursday, December 21st, but before you build those NHL daily fantasy lineups, don’t forget to check out our NHL DFS projections, the NHL Value Finder, and the NHL DFS lineup generator. Let's look closer at the daily fantasy hockey top plays for tonight's NHL DFS Showdown slate.
NHL DFS Playbook March 2nd
Recommended DFS Starting Goalies
Top Options for Saves
Igor Shesterkin Vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
Logan Thompson Vs. Buffalo Sabres
Arvid Soderblom Vs. Columbus Blue Jackets
Best Odds for a Win
Jake Oettinger Vs. San Jose Sharks
Andrei Vasilevskiy Vs. Montreal Canadiens
Elvis Merzlikins Vs. Chicago Blackhawks
Favorite Goalies to Use for DFS Lineups
Jake Oettinger, G, Dallas Stars
I say this every week but I REALLY dislike paying this much for a goalie, but the Stars are hosting the Sharks so Jake Oettinger has to be considered. The Sharks take the fewest shots and score the 2nd fewest goals per game in the league so we can expect a win for Oettinger. The problem is with the low shot total we expect from the Sharks, if he allows even two goals his fantasy production will take a massive hit.
Jacob Markstrom, G, Calgary Flames
Jacob Markstrom has been great for Calgary this year, holding a .914 SV% and 2.56 GAA on the season. Over his last 10 games, he has a 7-3 record and is coming off three straight wins over some tough opponents in Winnipeg, Boston, and Los Angeles. The Penguins are on their third straight road game and without Jake Guentzel and Bryan Rust which should bring a little more upside to Markstrom. The Penguins also have one of the worst power plays in the league at just 14.6% so even if they find themselves on the man advantage, they don’t have much of an advantage. In the same price range sits Igor Shesterkin who has also been amazing, but the Rangers are traveling to Toronto and the Leafs scare me.
Ilya Sorokin, G, New York Islanders
Once again Ilya Sorokin, one of the most talented goalies in the league, is one of the cheapest options at the position. He’s in a tough spot here against a top team in Boston, but he’s 6-2-2 over his last 10 games and has a .913 SV% and 2.92 GAA at home this year. He’s not my first choice but the Bruins are 3-5-2 in their last 10 games and his price tag is too appealing for me to ignore.
Recommended DFS Skaters
Highest Expected Goal Totals
Dallas Stars Vs Magnus Chrona (4.6)
Tampa Bay Lightning Vs. Cayden Primeau (4.1)
Philadelphia Flyers Vs. Mads Sogaard (3.5)
Favorite Skaters to Use for DFS Lineups
Brayden Point, C, Tampa Bay Lightning
Brayden Point has been very consistent lately, with points in eight straight games. Over his last 10 games, he has recorded six goals and four assists and is in a great matchup against the Canadiens who allow 3.50 goals per game. He’s on the same line as NHL points leader Nikita Kucherov and a key member of the league’s best power-play unit. The Canadiens also have one of the worst penalty kills in the league so I’m looking for another solid outing for Point.
Logan Stankoven, C, Dallas Stars
This game feels like a ‘take your pick’ situation as the Stars have an implied team total of 4.6 goals and most players on the roster are fairly priced. Moving down to Logan Stankoven can save a ton of salary without sacrificing much upside as he has a goal in three straight games. It’s a little risky taking a rookie with only four games of NHL experience, but he’s looked great on the third line with Wyatt Johnston and Jamie Benn. Stankoven is also slotted in the Stars’ 2nd power-play unit so the upside is there and if we get another goal, he will more than pay off his value price tag.
Artemi Panarin, W, New York Rangers
Artemi Panarin is having a tremendous season, already recording 82 points through 60 games. His 35 goals on the season are already a career-high and he’s been one of the driving factors for the Rangers’ success. He’s coming off 3 goals over his last two games and will have plenty of chances against Ilya Samsonov who has allowed three or more goals in four of his last five games. The Rangers have the 6th best power play in the league while the Leafs are bottom 10 on the penalty kill.
Tyson Foerster, W, Philadelphia Flyers
It’s not every day the Flyers have one of the highest implied team totals, but it puts Tyson Foerster on my radar. The young rookie has had some quiet stretches this year, but he’s currently rolling, recording seven goals over his last 10 games. The Flyers are without their best player in Travis Konecny, but Foerster will see time on the power play against Ottawa and their 31st-ranked penalty kill.
Victor Hedman, D, Tampa Bay Lightning
There are some solid choices at defenseman on this slate, but Victor Hedman is my favorite. Hedman shoots, blocks shots, and has 60 points through 60 games. He averages nearly 25 minutes of ice time per night and should have a pretty safe floor in this matchup. He’s recorded four assists in two games against Montreal this season and I am expecting that trend to continue. He can be stacked with the previously mentioned Brayden Point and is a core member of the league’s best power-play unit.
Oliver Kylington, D, Calgary Flames
Oliver Kylington should see a slightly expanded role in Calgary as they have traded Chris Tanev away. He’s only played in 12 games this season but has recorded at least two shots in his last five games while tallying nine blocks. Kylington has two goals and three assists over his last four games and has hit the blocked shot bonus twice. He’s a very cheap value option at defenseman and has upside while on the second pairing.

Player News
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that Zach Eflin (lat) is likely to return and start Sunday against the Angels
It was assumed that Eflin would be back this weekend, but now we have a concrete date. The 31-year-old may not be at full strength after throwing fewer than 60 pitches in his rehab start, but the Orioles feel confident enough to have the right-hander back on the bump for the series finale against the Angels.
Riley Greene is not in the lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Rockies on Thursday.
Greene will get a break and likely return to the lineup for the second game of the twin-billing. Zach McKinstry will get the start in left field while Greene rests.
Panthers released TE Jordan Matthews.
Matthews converted to tight end a few years ago and hasn’t made much noise at the position. The change has, however, likely kept him in the league for a few more seasons. He appeared in four games with the Panthers last year but didn’t record any stats on offense. The Panthers also released or waived WR Dax Milne, C Andrew Raym, and TE Colin Granger.
Yu Darvish (elbow) is facing live hitters on Thursday.
Darvish has been throwing bullpen sessions and traveled to the team’s complex in Arizona to face live hitters on Thursday. It will be his first time facing live batters since a spring training appearance on March 13th. He will likely need a few sessions like this before the Padres can map out a rehab appearance timeline for him.
Adael Amador is starting at second base and batting ninth for the Rockies on Thursday.
Amador has now started three of the last four games at second base for the Rockies. He’s gone just 7-for-43 this season with 15 strikeouts in 16 games. He’s just 22 years old, so there is plenty of time for him to adjust to the MLB level, but he doesn’t need to be on redraft radars right now.
Jackson Holliday is playing second base and batting second for the Orioles on Thursday against the Twins.
With Cedric Mullins sitting out on Thursday, Gunnar Henderson will bat lead off, and Holliday will jump up from sixth in the order to second. Holliday is riding a hot streak right now, and the Orioles are taking advantage. This is likely just a one-game sample with no Mullins or Adley Rutschman in the lineup, but Rutschman has been struggling, so perhaps it could become a more permanent spot in the lineup for Holliday moving forward.
