The New York Islanders are planning to go with both Ilya Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov in goal next season.
A lot of teams have been switching to a two-goalie rotation and the Islanders are no exception. There is a touch of concern about Sorokin who returned to Russia in the off-season but once he does come back, look for him to play about 50 games with Varlamov starting the remainder of the action.
Ilya Sorokin allowed five goals on 33 shots in Friday's 6-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Sorokin was beat on three separate occasions by Steven Stamkos as the 32-year-old Lightning forward terrorized the goaltender all night. The Islanders' season ended the same way it started -- short of expectations. Sorokin finished the season with a 26-18-8 record with a 2.40 goals-against average and .925 save percentage.
Ilya Sorokin is pegged to play on Friday against Tampa Bay.
Semyon Varlamov played in Thursday's win over Washington and the plan called for Sorokin to get the second half of the back-to-back in the team's season finale. He has a 26-17-8 record this season with a 2.35 GAA and .927 SV% in 51 appearances.
Ilya Sorokin stopped 32-of-33 shots in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Washington Capitals.
Sorokin yielded a Conor Sheary goal midway through the first period, but that would be all she wrote in terms of scoring on his watch. The 26-year-old netminder had been trounced for five goals by the Sabres in his last start, making Tuesday's showing a nice rebound performance. The Islanders will match up once more with the Caps on Thursday before wrapping up their regular season against the Lightning on Friday.
