Tanev found a way to play through two games against Edmonton in the second round despite the injury. Now that the Flames' postseason run is over, he'll undergo surgery. The expected recovery time is four-to-six months, so he might not be ready for the start of the 2022-23 campaign.

Tanev returned to the lineup for Tuesday's contest, but he certainly didn't appear to be 100%. Still, he managed to keep getting out there and ultimately logged 19:24 minutes. “I think he was very effective (Tuesday). His even-strength minutes, he was very effective,” said Flames coach Darryl Sutter. “We’re playing four younger defensemen, and those guys need a little bit of a security blanket. Chris Tanev is that, for sure. Not just on the ice, but in the locker-room.” The Flames, now down 3-1 in their series to Edmonton, will play on Thursday with everything on the line.

This will be Tanev's first game of the second round. He contributes a bit offensively, but where his return should really be felt is on the defensive side of things, which is where the Flames have needed help in this series.
