DFS Lineup Construction Thoughts
We have a massive 11-game slate that includes names like Nathan MacKinnon and Auston Matthews. It’s easy to pay up for the big names, but NHL DFS is all about finding value plays. There is no shortage of options to choose from so it’s important we don’t miss anything important. As always, we need to pick the right goalie. Let’s take a look at some options worth considering.
Recommended DFS Starting Goalies
Top Options for Saves
Cayden Primeau vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
Jake Oettinger vs. Ottawa Senators
Juuse Saros vs. Los Angeles Kings
Best Odds for a Win
Tristan Jarry vs. Montreal Canadiens
Andrei Vasilevskiy vs. Washington Capitals
Jake Oettinger vs. Ottawa Senators
Favorite Goalies to Use for DFS Lineups
Tristan Jarry, G, Pittsburgh Penguins
There’s no question that Tristan Jarry is the best goalie option on the slate. He’s 14-17-4 this season but has a 2.50 GAA and a .914 SV%. Montreal is playing their second game in as many nights, so hopefully, the Penguins can provide some goal support for their goalie and help him pick up the win.
Andrei Vasilevskiy, G, Tampa Bay Lightning
Andrei Vasilevskiy hasn’t been that great over his last two games, but he’s still a good goalie who can be given a ton of goal support on home ice. The Capitals are just a bad overall team and they don’t generate much offence. It might be hard for Vasilevskiy to hit value, but he has a great chance of picking up the win.
Jake Oettinger, G, Dallas Stars
If you aren’t going to roll with Jarry, Jake Oettinger is probably the next-best option. His numbers on the road are elite and his team can provide him with more than enough goal support. Ottawa loves to shoot the puck, but that doesn’t lead to more goals. He’s in a great spot to pick up the win AND hit the save bonus.
Alex Lyon, G, Detroit Red Wings
Detroit has a tough matchup against the Colorado Avalanche, but Alex Lyon is still a name worth considering. Colorado is middle-of-the-pack when it comes to goals scored on the road and Lyon has been much better on home ice. If anything, he will face a ton of shots and can still pick up the win. He’s a risky option, so only considering him in GPP formats.
Sergei Bobrovsky, G, Florida Panthers
Sergei Bobrovsky is 7-0-0 in his last seven starts and hasn’t allowed more than two goals in any of those games. His numbers overall are great and then get even better on the road. Carolina is a good hockey team, but I don’t think they get many past Bob and the Panthers have just been COOKING of late. He’s not going to be very popular, so we can get him at low ownership in all formats.
Recommended DFS Skaters
Highest Expected Goal Totals
Dallas Stars vs Anton Forsberg (3.7)
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Cayden Primeau (3.7)
Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Charlie Lindgren (3.9)
Favorite Skaters to Use for DFS Lineups
Sidney Crosby, C, Pittsburgh Penguins
There’s no reason to believe that Sidney Crosby can’t have himself an elite game tonight. Montreal is playing the tail end of a back-to-back and they are really #NotGood on the road. Crosby finished with seven shots on goal last game and could have himself another high-volume shot night in this game.
Wyatt Johnston, C, Dallas Stars
Dallas has decided to move Wyatt Johnston from the third line to the wing on the top line. The kid has been very good this season and has a chance to rack up some points tonight against a below-average Dallas team. The increased opportunity along with the cheap price tag make him a great play in all formats.
Nikita Kucherov, W, Tampa Bay Lightning
The Tampa Bay Lightning have been bad over their last two games and Nikita Kucherov finished last game with just 2.6 fantasy points. He’s going to have games like that, but he’s still one of the best players in the league. If you want to pay up for an elite winger, he’s your best option.
Mikko Rantanen, W, Colorado Avalanche
I don’t think Nathan MacKinnon is a bad option tonight, but I don’t want to spend over $10K for him when I can play Mikko Rantanen at $8400. Colorado is still a top-line-heavy team and Rantanen has played over 25 minutes in the last four games. The big boys are seeing just a crazy amount of ice time and it’s unlikely that anything changes tonight. He’s a good option as a single-bullet in all formats.
John Carlson, D, Washington Capitals
John Carlson has now blocked three or more shots in six straight games and continues to see a ton of ice time. The points aren’t coming as consistently, but his floor is still high and his matchup against Tampa Bay is a good one. I know $6000 seems like a lot for him, but he’s still worth considering in a GPP if you have the salary to spend.
Moritz Seider, D, Detroit Red Wings
Another defenceman with a high floor thanks to blocking shots. Moritz Seider has blocked 11 shots in the last two games and has added three points. Despite the success, he’s still only $4500 on DraftKings. Colorado is going to not shy away from shooting the puck and Seider is going to see a healthy amount of ice time. I like the value and think he can hit it without registering a point.
