Trading Sergei Bobrovsky could become an option for the Florida Panthers to free some salary-cap space.
Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar can become unrestricted free agents after the 2022-23 campaign. Spencer Knight will eligible for restricted free agency next summer. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported after Florida's second-round elimination at the hands of Tampa Bay that the team looked into moving Bobrovsky during the season, “or at least lay the groundwork to do it.” If this is a path that the Panthers choose to take then it won't be easy, with the 33-year-old netminder set to earn $10 million over the next four seasons.
Sergei Bobrovsky gave up only one goal on 25 shots but it was not enough as the Florida Panthers were shut out by the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 in Game 4 of the second round.
The loss eliminated the Presidents Trophy champions in four straight games as Bobrovsky was outplayed by Tampa Bay goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy all series. It was a tough loss for the Panthers who controlled the play the whole game but were unable to beat Vasilevskiy. The Lightning could not beat Bobrovsky in the first two periods before Pat Maroon finally beat Bobrovsky with a deflection that trickled over the goal line. Bobrovsky ends his 2022 Stanley Cup run with a 4-6 record to go with a 2.70 GAA and a .911 save percentage.
Sergei Bobrovsky is set to start in Game 4 on Monday.
Bobrovsky has a 4-5 record, 2.88 GAA, and .906 save percentage in nine playoff starts this year. He hasn't been perfect in the Panthers' second round series against the Lightning, but he's also not the primary reason Florida is down 3-0 going into Monday's contest.
Sergei Bobrovsky surrendered three goals on 34 shots in a 5-1 loss to Tampa Bay in Game 3 on Sunday.
Bobrovsky played well in the first period when he stopped 12 of 13 shots, but the two goals he surrendered in the second stanza led to his third straight postseason defeat. The Panthers can be eliminated from the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs on Monday night if they don't pick up a win. Tampa Bay has a 3-0 series lead.
