Charlie Lindgren has signed a three-year contract with the Washington Capitals worth $3.3 million.

Lindgren will be the backup netminder for the Capitals behind Darcy Kuemper, who was also signed by the team on the first day of free agency. In five NHL appearances for St. Louis last season, he went 5-0-0 with a 1.22 goals-against average and .958 save percentage. Don't expect numbers like that in 2022-23, but he should be a solid understudy for Kuemper.

The Blues dealt UFA-to-be Ville Husso to Detroit and currently there is a spot for the backup to Jordan Binnington. Lindgren was recalled in December last season due to injuries and was a star, going 5-0-0 with a 1.22 GAA and a .958 save percentage but was returned to the minors once Binnington and Husso returned to health. “Yes, he wants a one-way deal, and he played well enough that he will get a one-way deal,” his agent Ben Hankinson said. “There is a big need for goaltenders, so Charlie is in a really good spot. He’ll have a lot of options where to go just because he’s ‘been there, done that.’ He fits right into the NHL room, as you saw with the connection he made with the Blues players and fans. The Blues had a good spot for him last year and hopefully that continues. We’ll see in the next few days what happens, but the communications are strong between us and the Blues.”

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is hearing that the Blues will recall netminder Charlie Lindgren from Springfield of the AHL.

The Blues need another goaltender with Jordan Binnington on the sidelines with a knee injury and Lindgren makes the most sense to back up Ville Husso. Lindgren was great for the Blues this season, going 5-0-0 with a 1.22 GAA and a .958 save percentage before he was returned to the minors on Jan. 2. Lindgren was 24-7-1 with a 2.21 GAA and a .925 save percentage for Springfield in the regular season and was 2-0 with a 3.50 GAA and a .916 save percentage thus far in the post-season.
