NHL DFS Picks & Playbook Today, 3/5
DFS Lineup Construction Thoughts
We have a massive 12-game slate that includes some elite players in very good matchups. The Trade Deadline is tomorrow, so some teams may elect to sit players so they don’t get hurt. We have another slate with Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews, so we have to consider them. There is a ton of good value on this slate, so let’s take a look at some options.
NHL DFS Goalie Picks
Top Options for Saves
Daniil Tarasov vs. Edmonton Oilers
Joonas Korpisalo vs. Los Angeles Kings
Sam Montembeault vs. Carolina Hurricanes
Best Odds for a Win
Sergei Bobrovsky vs. Philadelphia Flyers
Frederik Andersen vs. Montreal Canadiens
Ilya Sorokin vs. San Jose Sharks
NHL DFS Lineups: Best Goalies to Use
Frederik Andersen, G, Carolina Hurricanes
Welcome back, Frederik Andersen. The veteran netminder is making his first start since November and has a great matchup against Montreal. The Canadiens have been playing better of late, but they haven’t won in Carolina since 2016 and they are still a below-average team on the road. Andersen is expensive, but he’s worth the price.
Cam Talbot, G, Los Angeles Kings
Cam Talbot has allowed one goal in three of his last five starts and gets a great matchup against an Ottawa team that is playing their second game in as many nights and that managed to score just ONE goal against the Ducks. The Senators are bad and it’s not going to get any better tonight. Talbot is a great option in all formats.
Tristan Jarry, G, Pittsburgh Penguins
The Pittsburgh Penguins may be a below-average hockey team, but they still believe that they can make the playoffs. The Capitals have officially started to sell off assets and they are just horrendous on the road. Tristan Jarry has been good this season, but his team has just provided him with no support. He’s in a good spot tonight to at least hit value.
Joonas Korpisalo, G, Ottawa Senators
Are we going to see a Joonas Korpisalo revenge game? Maybe, but I wouldn’t bet the mortgage on it. The good news is, Korpisalo is going to see a ton of rubber, so if he can keep his goals to three or fewer, he can still hit value without having to win the game. It’s a long shot, but one that could pay off in a GPP.
Magnus Chrona, G, San Jose Sharks
SHOUT OUT TO TESSA’S BOYFRIEND (IFYKY) who’s getting another start. Margus Chrona was pretty good against Dallas and has a decent matchup on paper. The Islanders are ranked 25th in goals on the road and their offence just isn’t that exciting. The Sharks are trash, but this game won’t be a blowout and Chrona is $7,100 on DraftKings. He’s not a cash game option, but you can do a lot worse in a GPP.
DFS NHL Player Picks
Highest Expected Goal Totals
Edmonton Oilers vs. Daniil Tarasov (4.2)
Carolina Hurricanes vs. Sam Montembeault (3.9)
Florida Panthers vs. Samuel Ersson (3.7)
NHL DFS Lineups: Best Skaters to Use
Connor McDavid, C, Edmonton Oilers
It just feels like a Connor McDavid night. The Oilers captain has 10 points in the last five games and 12 shots on goal in the last two. Columbus is a bad overall team and they aren’t going to slow down McDavid. He’s expensive, but he could very well finish with multiple points.
Auston Matthews, C, Toronto Maple Leafs
This isn’t a great matchup on paper for Auston Matthews, but let's not pretend like that’s a reason to not consider him. The man has 54 goals on the season and he’s on pace for over 70. Boston has been a middle-of-the-pack team over the last few weeks, so Matthews could very well come out and have a strong game. We know he’s going to shoot the puck a ton, but he needs a goal and the shot bonus to hit value.
Zach Hyman, W, Edmonton Oilers
I don’t understand how Zach Hyman isn’t $10K over on DK, because all the man does is score goals. He has 42 goals on the year and ten in the last ten games. He’s a stud and is benefitting from playing with McDavid. His shot volume will never be high, but he’s going to be around the net and the Blue Jackets aren’t going to stop him.
Jack Hughes, W, New Jersey Devils
We don’t know what the Devils are going to do at the trade deadline, but we know that Jack Hughes is going to have a strong game tonight. He’s been playing well over 20 minutes a night in the last five and has been shooting the puck a healthy amount. If New Jersey wants to make a push for a playoff spot, they need Hughes to continue to do what he does best; score goals. I like what he can bring tonight.
Noah Dobson, D, New York Islanders
Noah Dobson is elite and there is no two ways around it. He can rack up points, shoot the puck and block shots. The Sharks are a bottom-tier team and that isn’t changing tonight. I don’t love the Islanders overall, but I do love Dobson and his high floor.
Erik Gudbranson, D, Columbus Blue Jackets
Erik Gudbranson isn’t a sexy play, but you know exactly what you’re going to get out of him. At his $3400 price tag, we’re looking for at least three blocked shots and a couple of shots on goal to hit value. He can certainly do all of that against an Edmonton team that is going to fire everything at the net. At worst, the veteran defenseman’s cheap price allows you to pay up for another elite forward.
