The Canadiens didn't disclose the financial terms of the deal beyond stating that it's a one-way contract. Montembeault had an 8-18-6 record, 3.77 GAA, and .891 save percentage in 38 games in 2021-22.

Montembeault is expected to be fully recovered and ready for the start of training camp in September. He played in a career-high 38 games during the 2021-22 season, while going 8-18-6 with a 3.77 GAA and .891 SV%. 

Montembeault looked like he was on the verge of losing it in the third period, when he surrendered goals to Frank Vatrano and Ryan Strome. Strome's goal tied the contest at 3-3 with under five minutes remaining in regulation. With the game just about to enter overtime, though, Jeff Petry scored a decisive go-ahead goal against Alexandar Georgiev at the 19:29 mark in third period. Given the way the season has gone for both teams, it would have come as no surprise for the cooked Canadiens to cave in against the postseason-bound Rangers. This was one of Montembeault's better starts in April -- he had struggled in allowing 17 total goals over his last three starts prior to shaping up by degrees on Wednesday. Montreal will finish up their season in a Friday matchup with the Panthers.

With Carey Price sidelined due to recurring problems with his surgically repaired knee, Montembeault will get another start. The Canadiens have a lot to play for, as a regulation loss would guarantee them the best chances at the top pick in the upcoming draft. Montembeault has a 7-18-6 record with a 3.79 goals-against-average and a .892 save percentage.
