When you go 11-6 and make the NFL Playoffs, that’s a successful season. Many fan bases are begging for that. In the NFC North though, that lands you in third place behind the Detroit Lions (15-2) and Minnesota Vikings (14-3). And it has you asking how you can improve in the NFL offseason for next year.

The Packers have a quarterback that they like in Jordan Love. They have a running back that they paid up for who delivered in Josh Jacobs. As for pass catchers, they have a lot of solid players on affordable contracts. But they don’t quite have that superstar. And folks are divided on whether or not they are needed.

We’re here today to at least explore the possibility of the Green Bay Packers acquiring new weapons in 2025 NFL free agency. Let’s take a look at the depth chart, the contracts, the cap space, and the free agents to see what might be reasonable for them.

We’ll make some predictions and maybe those can help you out in your dynasty fantasy football leagues or early best ball drafts, if you dabble in those.

Packers Quarterback Depth Chart

Jordan LoveJordan Love is locked into a long-term deal. And the Packers still have cap space to work with which is a rare occurrence after signing a franchise quarterback. The Packers and fans are happy with him.

For dynasty fantasy football, this is a guy I love having in superflex or two quarterback leagues. You feel comfortable with him in the lineup in any given week. In single quarterback leagues, if he’s my starting quarterback, I’m at least making sure I have some sort of path to difference-making upside on the bench, ideally via a mobile QB.

Love hardly ran in the 2024 iteration of the offense so having someone like Bo Nix, Drake Maye, or Kyler Murray to pair with him feels like a good way to get some high risk, high reward exposure.

Malik WillisMalik Willis had a tough showing in his brief time in Tennessee. But he actually looked pretty decent for Green Bay when asked to keep the ship afloat.

Two wins in two starts while throwing for 550 and 3 TDs with no interceptions on the season - who could be mad at that? He even had a rushing touchdown. He’s a free agent after the 2025 season so, in deeper superflex leagues, he’s a name to keep an eye on.

PACKERS QB FREE AGENCY TAKE: It seems crazy given the circumstances in which he showed up and was thrown into the fire fairly quickly, but I’d actually be comfortable with Malik Willis as the backup QB.

They might want to carry someone on the practice squad, and they’ll need to figure something out for 2026 if he decides to test the market. But for now, I don’t see adding another quarterback as a huge need in Green Bay.

Packers Running Back Depth Chart

Josh JacobsIf it wasn’t for Saquon Barkley’s season, capped with a Super Bowl win, everyone would be talking about how great the signing of Josh Jacobs was. He showed up and single handedly won games for this team. He was the exact hard-nosed runner that Matt LaFleur has been looking for since he parted ways with Tennessee and Derrick Henry.

If you are competing to win now in your dynasty leagues, this is the kind of guy I’m buying. No one is going to trade you someone like Jahmyr Gibbs or Bijan Robinson at a reasonable price whether they are competing now or not.

If the team holding Jacobs is looking to play for the future, they might be willing to sell you a 27-year-old Josh Jacobs at a reasonable price though. And this is a guy that will be in your lineup every single week.

MarShawn LloydThere was a lot of buzz about MarShawn Lloyd both before and after the Packers drafted him. One beat writer even said that he does “anything and everything that Jahmyr Gibbs can do for Detroit”. The fantasy football world was fired up, to say the least.

Unfortunately, we never really got to see him in action. Hip and hamstring injuries kept him out for most of the summer then he hurt his ankle in the first game and landed on IR. In mid-November he ended up having emergency surgery for appendicitis that ended his season.

If you were interested in Lloyd before, now is probably the cheapest he will be to acquire. I’ve got him as a hold given how good Josh Jacobs was, but he should mix in at least some to keep Jacobs fresh. And he’s still only 24 years old.

AJ Dillon: AJ Dillon also had an unfortunate season as he suffered a stinger in August that caused him to miss the entire season. Hopefully, he can get healthy here and play again but he’s now an unrestricted free agent in 2025 and he’s not a lock to return to Green Bay.

Emmanuel Wilson: Wilson actually proved, when asked, that he can be a capable third down back in this league and provide a little spark on draws and screens. Of the unrestricted free agent options for Green Bay, he’s most likely to be back in my opinion.

Chris BrooksWith all the injuries Chris Brooks had to step up and play some offensive snaps on top of his special teams duties. He can be released this year with zero dead cap, so he’ll need to make this roster from scratch in camp like a lot of other guys out there.

  • Reserves/Futures: N/A

PACKERS RB FREE AGENCY TAKE: They have their starter in Josh Jacobs. MarShawn Lloyd should hopefully be a solid backup that skews more toward the pass-catching realm. If they want to compliment him, they might be interested in bringing in a bruiser. AJ Dillon could return in that role but here are some other affordable options.

POSSIBLE FREE AGENT OPTIONS: AJ Dillon, Cam Akers, Elijah Mitchell, Khalil Herbert, D'Onta Foreman, Alexander Mattison

Packers Wide Receiver Depth Chart

Romeo DoubsWe’ll start with Romeo Doubs as he was the most consistent Packer in terms of usage when healthy.  He was the only guy routinely playing more than 80% of the snaps lining up primarily on the outside. At 6’2” 200+ pounds, he’s big enough to play both split end and flanker when asked.

The rub with Doubs is that he’s good enough to be an every-down player but do you want him to be the top wide receiver on your team squaring off with the other team’s top corner? Despite his heavy deployment, he’s never cracked 100 yards in a regular season game - his only 100+ yard game in the 48-32 playoff win against Dallas in 2023.

With the top-heavy nature of dynasty fantasy football and the rumors that the Packers could try to add a weapon, Romeo Doubs is probably a guy I’m looking to sell if there’s a market. If he’s not going to really pop as the top WR for Jordan Love, I’m just not sure when he will. He’s an unrestricted free agent after this season and his name has appeared in some Packers trade rumors.

Jayden ReedLast offseason I wrote an article about three dynasty wide receivers to buy. The idea behind it was that these were primary slot players that could graduate to every-down players at some point in their career. The guys in the article were Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Jayden Reed, and Josh Downs.

In 2024, JSN did become an every-down player with Tyler Lockett taking a back seat. The other two did not. Jayden Reed still played 520 slot snaps while maxing out at 12 snaps out wide this year (and that was a Week 5 game without Doubs). That part time slot role means that he never once played 80% or more of the snaps in a game.

I do think that Jayden Reed is talented enough to be a full-time player. Right now, the Packers simply have too many cheap weapons and don’t feel the need to deploy him that way. I’m holding Reed as the contracts are coming due for all these guys and whoever ends up paying Reed on a second deal is going to want to get the most out of him.

Christian WatsonThe Packers like Christian Watson, when healthy. But health has been the biggest issue. For his first two years, he dealt with serious hamstring issues. This year he suffered an ankle injury, a knee bruise, and then finally a torn ACL. That ACL came in January which makes it incredibly unlikely he’ll be ready to go for the start of this year.

There’s really no other way to label Christian Watson than as a hold in your dynasty leagues. No one is going to trade you anything meaningful for him right now. And, unless it’s a shallow league, you probably aren’t just going to drop him. All you can really do is stash him in an IR spot and wait it out. He’s got one year left with the Packers before becoming a free agent.

Dontayvion WicksDontayvion Wicks has been a fairly polarizing player. As a part-time player he has had a fairly small sample size of stats. But he’s been able to make some big plays on those limited snaps where had his underlying metrics popping off the charts coming out of 2023.

That had both Packers fans and fantasy gamers labeling him as a breakout candidate. All that led to quite a disappointing 2024 for Wicks. He struggled to carve out a meaningful role unless Christian Watson or Romeo Doubs were out. And his 18% drop rate led all wide receivers that got at least 20 targets.

With Christian Watson set to miss time recovering from the ACL, he’s currently set to start for the Packers. But obviously adding one high end option pushes him back to the WR4. Per Alex Korff’s dynasty trade value charts, which attempt to capture industry sentiment, you probably can’t get more than a rookie third round pick for Wicks right now.

Even as a Wicks detractor to some extent, I’d rather hold than sell him for that. The hit rates on those picks are a lot lower in reality than we imagine. He’s under contract on a cheap deal through 2026.

Malik HeathMalik Heath, to some degree, has been Jayden Reed's understudy. Which doesn’t really see him play much as Jayden Reed didn’t miss a game in 2024 and missed only one game in 2023. In that one game Heath did play 77% of the snaps. His contract is up before Reed’s is so that’s probably his role until then.

He can also be released this year for only $3K in dead cap. They did carry six WRs for most of the year and Christian Watson will start the year on the IR so, even if they add someone, they can probably afford to hold onto Heath.

Bo MeltonI quietly like Bo Melton. This team kind of hit the lottery with Watson, Reed, Doubs, and Wicks so he’s been stuck on the depth chart. But, when he does get a chance, he can do a decent job operating out of the slot.

I think someone picks up Melton in free agency to give him a look. He only needs to be considered in really deep dynasty leagues but it’s not crazy to hold onto him just to see what the market is like in free agency. You’ll need to drop guys in for your rookie draft in May anyway so can just cut bait if he doesn’t land in a decent spot.

PACKERS WR FREE AGENCY TAKE: At least one Packer thinks they need a true WR1. Josh Jacobs in a recent interview said so himself. And, regardless of what Dontayvion Wicks thinks about that, we have to consider it a possibility.

Now the term “WR1” isn’t a super meaningful term when it comes to scheme. We broke down the different roles in this article here in terms of split end, flanker, slot, tight end (often also referred to as X, Y, Z etc.). The word “WR1” in this context really just means a dominant playmaker, which the Packers really don’t have.

They do seem to like Jayden Reed out of the slot. And he’s under contract for two more years. So, if they add someone, it would be a guy that operates on the outside. Players like Tee Higgins and Chris Godwin are no longer looking as likely to hit the market. So here are the players that would be an upgrade over guys like Doubs, Wicks, and Watson. Otherwise, the draft is the way.

Packers Tight End Depth Chart

Tucker KraftThere were some rumblings about how much they liked Tucker Kraft. And that came to fruition when he took over the starting job from Luke Musgrave despite having a torn pec for most of the offseason. His emergence is reminiscent of Mark Andrews surpassing Hayden Hurst in Baltimore despite Hurst being drafted first in the same year.

With their emphasis on the run game, it makes sense that they would go Kraft over Musgrave. And now Kraft for me is a hold in your dynasty leagues while we wait to see what happens with these Packers WRs and their contracts.

The vast majority of fantasy relevant tight ends either lead their target or are second and they simply had too many mouths to feed. When it’s time to pay everyone, hopefully, Kraft will have his day in the sun. He’s one of the rare tight ends to have multiple 60+ yard plays in one season.

Luke MusgraveThe Packers were drafting “best available” players and then figuring out how they were going to fit into the scheme as they went. As it turns out, Musgrave is better served as a “big slot” tight end and they already have a guy who primarily plays slot in Jayden Reed. That doesn’t leave much of a role for him. Add injury to that and he did very little this year.

Given that info, Musgrave should be a guy that the Packers look to trade. It’s a very thin free agent tight end market and some teams out there could be interested in his skillset. I’m holding or even buying for very cheap in dynasty to see how things shake out for him.

Ben SimsPer Pro Football Focus, Ben Sims blocked on 71% of his plays. That’s your prototypical “extra lineman” right there. He’s under contract for another year but can be released with zero dead cap and $1M in savings if they decide on someone else for that role. They like Sims though.

John FitzPatrickWith Luke Musgrave out the Packers elevated FB/TE Andrew Beck from the practice squad. When they ran out of weekly callups for him, they elevated John FitzPatrick. FitzPatrick is now a restricted free agent who they will not use that tender on but they could have him back in camp to compete.

PACKERS TE FREE AGENCY TAKE: The Packers are pretty set at the tight end position unless they want to trade Luke Musgrave. If they do trade Musgrave, you have to imagine they would be looking for another balanced “two-way” tight end that blocks and catches passes since they already had a pure pass-catcher in Luke Musgrave. You don’t trade Musgrave then sign someone like Mike Gesicki. Here are the guys who could fit that bill.

POSSIBLE FREE AGENT OPTIONS: Austin Hooper, Hayden Hurst, Irv Smith, Jordan Akins, Harrison Bryant
