Packers signed RB MarShawn Lloyd to a four-year contract.

Lloyd has a chance to earn significant snaps early in his career. Despite a crowded backfield that includes Josh Jacobs and AJ Dillon, Packers OC Adam Stenavich said earlier this month that he hopes to play Lloyd “as much as possible.” Lloyd is a versatile, explosive back who made the most of his one season at USC. Last season with the Trojans, he rushed for 116-820-9 while adding another 13 catches for 232 yards. Lloyd has early fantasy value as a handcuff to Jacobs/Dillon, but could emerge as a more meaningful contributor once we see how things play out in training camp.

The Packers have a talented trio of backs in Lloyd, Josh Jacobs, and AJ Dillon. They selected Lloyd with the No. 88 overall pick in this year’s draft, but it’s hard to know where he could fit in early in the season. The easy answer is third down, as Lloyd caught 34 passes during his college career and averaged an impressive 13.3 YPR. With that said, Jacobs has two 50-catch seasons on his resumé and didn’t sign a four-year, $48 million deal to ride the pine. While we’d expect Lloyd to be on the field plenty as a rookie, he may not have much fantasy upside unless an injury paves a way for more playing time.

And just like that, the Packers have re-crowded their remade, Josh Jacobs-led backfield. Spending all but one of his college seasons at South Carolina, Lloyd (5’9/220) redshirted his freshman season due to a torn ACL and transferred to USC for an efficient 2023. He rushed for 820 yards and nine touchdowns on 116 carries, adding 13 receptions for 232 yards. Lloyd was the lead back for Lincoln Riley, complementing Caleb Williams’ quarterback play with chunk gains and pass-catching utility. He ran a 4.46 40-yard dash at the combine, showcasing above-average speed for a back of his size. Lloyd’s athleticism and ability to make tacklers miss in the open field should make him a contributor as both a rusher and a pass-catcher, though, with fewer than 300 carries to his name in college, he may be viewed as a committee back at the NFL level. Third downs will undoubtedly be where he begins his NFL career.
