MLB DFS Playbook May 3: Top Plays for DraftKings and FanDuel

Published: May 03, 2023
We have eight games for today's MLB DFS main slate with Coors Field on the slate which will dominate a lot of the rostership here tonight, especially given the matchup with Eric Lauer and Kyle Freeland on the mound for the Brewers and Rockies in a game that opened with a game total of 11.5 and is now up to 12. We also have some weather to possibly check in on as we approach roster lock for today's slate! Be sure to check in with our MLB DFS Tools, with the daily MLB projections, MLB DFS rostership projections, and our MLB DFS Lineup Generator when building those lineups today to help you decide which players you should be targeting!
MLB DFS Playbook: May 3
MLB Weather Updates
Cleveland Guardians vs New York Yankees
Unfortunate that rain may impact this game as the matchup involves one of the best pitching spots on the slate along with a favorable lineup stack for the Guardians. Current reports seems to indicate that this game could have a delayed start or they just play in the wet weather. Make sure to monitor as we get closer to roster lock.
Toronto Blue Jays vs Boston Red Sox
As someone who lives 15 minutes from the ballpark it looks like most of this rain isn't going to hit the area until the later innings if at all. While, yes, it is raining in Massachusetts, I think we are OK.
Seattle Mariners vs Oakland Athletics
Some rain expected here, but how much and how will it impact the game will likely not be known until after roster lock.
DFS Lineup Construction Thoughts
If the weather holds out in New York tonight then I am all aboard the Shane Bieber train here against the Yankees and a stack of lefties in the Guardians lineup against Clarke Schmidt. It's also hard to fade Coors Field this evening with a game total that is up to 12 runs and a pair of lefties on the mound that are certainly beatable. With eight games on the slate there is some decent value options as well that will help us spend up for the key players we need this evening.

Favorite Starters to Use for DFS Lineups
Shane Bieber, Cleveland Guardians
Listen, we have seen pitchers of varying talent levels shut down the Yankees lineup lately and while Bieber is not exactly looking like a former Cy Young winner, this matchup is too good to pass up. The Yankees bottom half of the lineup is at best a minor league roster and one that I could see Bieber going through like a hot knife in butter.
Logan Gilbert, Seattle Mariners
Well, we thought it was initially going to be George Kirby but now we have Logan Gilbert. It's all the same to me as the Mariners draw the Oakland A's who nearly had a prefect game thrown against them by a pitcher making his Major League debut right from Double-A. I love the strikeout upside here for Gilbert who has had no less than six strikeout in any start this year while totaling 34 Ks over 27.2 innings.
Louie Varland, Minnesota Twins
A cheap pitcher with a lot of strikeout upside against a lineup that really is struggling right now. We've had success in this spot recently and I think we can run back to Varland here again after his solid debut where he allowed three runs over six innings against the Yankees while striking out eight. He did allow three solo home runs so he will need to keep the ball in the park tonight for this play to hit.

Favorite Hitters to Use for DFS Lineups
Josh Naylor, 1B Cleveland Guardians
Left-handed hitters are smashing Schmidt this season, hitting .396 with an .811 slugging percentage and a .526 wOBA. He has allowed five home runs and 12 total extra base hits against lefties. Naylor himself is starting to heat up, hitting .324 with an OPS of .833 and a slugging percentage of .500 over the last 10 games. Left-handed power in Yankee Stadium has a lot of home run upside. Let's hope the weather holds out for us here tonight.
Jorge Mateo, SS Baltimore Orioles
When you think of the best players in baseball you may think of names like Mike Trout, Trea Turner or Vladimir Guerrero Jr.. Jr. but the actual answer to that thought this season might as well be Jorge Mateo as the Orioles shortstop who is hitting .338 with six home runs, 10 stolen bases and an OPS of 1.020. Against right-handed pitching this season Mateo is hitting .317 with a .659 slugging percentage and a .419 wOBA. All elite marks.
Jarren Duran, OF Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox prospect has come up and the bat is finally playing. Duran smashed his way through the minor leagues but once he got to the MLB he struck out way too much and he is still striking out but he is also making a ton of great contact and is hitting .396 with an OPS of 1.093 in his 15 games since being called up. Lefty bats are also doing the damage against Manoah this season as they have a .422 slugging percentage and a .358 wOBA.

Player News
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that Zach Eflin (lat) is likely to return and start Sunday against the Angels
It was assumed that Eflin would be back this weekend, but now we have a concrete date. The 31-year-old may not be at full strength after throwing fewer than 60 pitches in his rehab start, but the Orioles feel confident enough to have the right-hander back on the bump for the series finale against the Angels.
Riley Greene is not in the lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Rockies on Thursday.
Greene will get a break and likely return to the lineup for the second game of the twin-billing. Zach McKinstry will get the start in left field while Greene rests.
Yu Darvish (elbow) is facing live hitters on Thursday.
Darvish has been throwing bullpen sessions and traveled to the team’s complex in Arizona to face live hitters on Thursday. It will be his first time facing live batters since a spring training appearance on March 13th. He will likely need a few sessions like this before the Padres can map out a rehab appearance timeline for him.
Adael Amador is starting at second base and batting ninth for the Rockies on Thursday.
Amador has now started three of the last four games at second base for the Rockies. He’s gone just 7-for-43 this season with 15 strikeouts in 16 games. He’s just 22 years old, so there is plenty of time for him to adjust to the MLB level, but he doesn’t need to be on redraft radars right now.
Jackson Holliday is playing second base and batting second for the Orioles on Thursday against the Twins.
With Cedric Mullins sitting out on Thursday, Gunnar Henderson will bat lead off, and Holliday will jump up from sixth in the order to second. Holliday is riding a hot streak right now, and the Orioles are taking advantage. This is likely just a one-game sample with no Mullins or Adley Rutschman in the lineup, but Rutschman has been struggling, so perhaps it could become a more permanent spot in the lineup for Holliday moving forward.
Endy Rodriguez (finger) had his splint removed this week.
Rodriguez suffered a lacerated right index finger on April 14th. Now that he is out of his splint, he “is playing catch and doing a slightly modified swing.” Once he can progress to taking full swings, we’ll have a better sense of the timeline for his return.
