Nationals vs. Diamondbacks Predictions: Sunday, June 1st
The Arizona Diamondbacks are slumping lately, losing nine of their last 10 games. That includes the first two games of this weekend’s series against the Washington Nationals. Sunday’s home matchup presents a prime opportunity to get back in the win column and break the losing streak.
Arizona has its ace on the mound today in Corbin Burnes, who has a 2.72 ERA this season. After some shaky starts to begin the year, Burnes is dealing over the past month-plus. The right-hander boasts a 1.83 ERA over his past seven starts coming into this outing. He’s also tossed a quality start in seven of his last eight appearances.
Burnes has mostly dominated at home this season. He has a 1.72 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and .243 wOBA allowed in five home starts compared to a 3.81 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and .345 wOBA allowed in five road outings. Today, we’ll get that home version of the Diamondbacks’ starter.
Washington’s offense has been producing recently, but it’s still fadeable on the road against Burnes here. The Nationals are slightly below-average on the road this year with a .308 wOBA (18th in MLB), 94 wRC+ (18th), and .235 batting average (21st). The D-Backs need a strong outing from Burnes after yesterday’s starter, Brandon Pfaadt, allowed eight runs in the first inning and got pulled before he even recorded an out.
On the other side, Nats starter Mitchell Parker likely runs into early trouble. He has an ugly 8.46 ERA over his last six starts, with 4+ earned runs allowed in five of those six outings. Parker also has struggled to a 6.04 ERA on the road compared to a 3.63 ERA at home this year. The left-hander’s low 15.4% K rate (9th percentile), 20.3% whiff rate (16th), and 46.8% hard-hit rate (14th) are concerning metrics as well.
Meanwhile, the D-backs are a top-tier offense at home with a .349 wOBA (3rd), 120 wRC+ (6th), .197 ISO (3rd), and 16.7% K rate (1st). They’re also hitting lefties well over the past two weeks with a .355 wOBA, 127 wRC+, .220 ISO, .285 BA, and 16.4% K rate. Simply put, this is a tough matchup for Parker on the road.
Let’s back Arizona to cover the run line for the full game and first five innings. The Diamondbacks are due for a comfortable home victory, and Burnes can anchor that today.

Giants vs. Marlins Predictions: Sunday, June 1st
Let’s now turn our attention to the series finale between the San Francisco Giants and Miami Marlins. The visiting Giants took the opener on Friday, 2-0, before the Marlins took a 1-0 victory on Saturday. Today’s matchup could be another low-scoring contest, but we’ll be targeting a certain team to win.
Giants starter Hayden Birdsong has a solid 2.48 ERA this season, but he’s likely due for negative regression. His 3.81 FIP and 3.92 xERA are both notably higher than the current ERA. Plus, the right-hander had a shaky 4.75 ERA in 16 starts last year for San Fran.
Birdsong began the year in the bullpen and just re-entered the Giants’ rotation. He was very effective as a multi-inning reliever, but that ERA could start to rise now that he’s in the traditional starter role. Birdsong struggled a bit on the road at Detroit last outing, allowing three runs on five hits across 4.1 innings.
The Marlins can present a sneaky-tough matchup here. They’re hitting right-handed pitching well over the past two weeks with a .280 BA (4th in MLB), .338 wOBA (7th), and 17.8% K rate (3rd). Meanwhile, Birdsong has a 4.63 ERA and .357 wOBA allowed on the road compared to a 1.29 ERA and .296 wOBA at home.
Ryan Weathers will start for Miami. He boasts a 1.15 ERA and 0.89 WHIP through three starts so far this season. Weathers was effective at times last year and even posted a 3.16 ERA over his final 10 starts. That gives the left-hander an impressive 2.72 ERA over his past 13 outings overall.
Weathers faced the Giants at home last season and tossed six innings of two-run ball. He can be just as productive this time around. San Francisco has struggled against lefties over the past two weeks with a .255 wOBA (26th in MLB), 62 wRC+ (26th), and .195 batting average (27th). The offense is also hitting just .214 on the road (28th) with a 26.0% K rate (29th) this year.
Plus, the Giants are 6-14 over their last 20 road games. The San Francisco hitters may also be in getaway mode while wrapping up a nine-game road trip before traveling home to face the division-rival Padres tomorrow night. There’s clear value in backing the Marlins as home underdogs today.

Player News
Ketel Marte is not in the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Angels.
Marte will sit out Sunday’s first-half finale to get some extra rest ahead of next week’s All-Star Game. The 31-year-old veteran second baseman has been battling through a lingering groin issue over the last week. It doesn’t sound like he’s in any danger of missing the Midsummer Classic.
Astros general manager Dana Brown said Sunday on SportsTalk 790 that Yordan Alvarez (hand) will be re-evaluated on Thursday.
The hope is that Alvarez will finally be cleared to resume hitting assuming that he’s pain-free. The 28-year-old fantasy stalwart has been out since early May recovering from a small fracture in his right hand. There should be a clearer return timetable at some point next week once he’s re-evaluated. He’ll likely require an extended rehab assignment to get back up to speed after such a long layoff.
Shane Bieber (elbow) will make a minor league rehab start on Tuesday in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League.
It’ll be Bieber’s first game action since suffering a setback last month in his recovery from last year’s Tommy John surgery. The positive news here is that he isn’t dealing with any sort of structural damage, but he’s going to be racing the clock in order to make it back to Cleveland before the late stages of the regular season.
Luis Gil (lat) recorded six strikeouts and allowed one run over 3 1/3 innings on Sunday in a minor league rehab start for Double-A Somerset.
It certainly qualifies as an electric rehab outing as Gil threw 36 of 50 pitches for strikes and topped out at 97 mph in this one. The 27-year-old reigning AL Rookie of the Year has been out since spring training recovering from a lat strain. New York is going to be cautious with his ramp-up from a workload standpoint, so fantasy managers should anticipate a couple additional rehab outings before he’s ready to make his season debut.
Guardians OF prospect Chase DeLauter is dealing with right wrist soreness.
DeLauter can’t seem to catch a break. The 23-year-old top prospect, who has battled foot injuries the past few years, is set to undergo further evaluation after experiencing symptoms earlier this week while playing for Triple-A Columbus. He’s one of the most talented hitting prospects left in the minors and has a chance to make a serious impact for Cleveland, if he’s able to stay healthy enough to make it to the majors. There should be an update on his status at some point during next week’s All-Star break.
Kyle Schwarber is leading off on Sunday against the Padres.
Schwarber finds himself atop Philadelphia’s lineup for the first time since early April as they close out the first half in San Diego. It’s a notable development for the 32-year-old slugger, who is up to 30 round-tripper’s this season through 95 games. Speedy shortstop Trea Turner has been moved to the second spot in the order.
