Yuli Gurriel elected free agency after refusing an outright assignment to Triple-A Reno by the Padres.
Gurriel is all but assuredly going to be looking at another minor league deal, but he’ll test the waters and look for a situation that might provide another MLB deal. The 40-year-old’s not likely to see a robust market at this stage.
Phillies placed RHP José Ruiz on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 1, with neck spasms.
Ruiz will be out of commission until at least the middle of May. The 30-year-old has posted a 4.76 ERA and 11/6 K/BB over his 12 appearances with Philadelphia over the first month-plus of 2025.
Daniel Schneemann went 2-for-4 with two homers and five RBI to lead the Guardians to a 5-3 comeback win against the Blue Jays on Saturday.
Schneemann got the start at second base with José Ramirez out of the lineup and was the hero for the team on Saturday. He had driven in the only run of the game for Cleveland, taking Chad Green deep for a solo homer in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the ninth, down by two runs, Schneemann slugged a grand slam off Yimi García to take the lead. The 28-year-old utility man is hitting .276/.344/.552 with four homers and nine RBI across 65 plate appearances.
Bo Bichette went 1-for-4 with a solo homer and a walk against the Guardians on Saturday.
Bichette sent his first home run of the season deep to left field off Gavin Williams to lead off the bottom of the first inning. It has to feel good for the 27-year-old shortstop, who hadn’t homered since May 27 of last season. Bichette added a walk to his line, ending his day slashing .284/.320/.376 with 14 RBI and three steals across 150 plate appearances.
Phillies activated LHP Ranger Suárez off the 15-day injured list.
Suárez is off the injured list ahead of Sunday’s start against the Diamondbacks. It’ll be the first outing of the season for the 29-year-old at the highest level. To make room for him, José Ruiz was placed on the 15-day injured list with neck spasms. Suárez is worthy of fantasy consideration, but the D-Backs lineup could present some challenges in his first start back.
Emmanuel Clase tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save against the Blue Jays on Saturday.
Clase took over in the ninth to close out the game after Cleveland took a two-run lead in the top of the inning. He induced two groundouts and a pop out to end the game with his sixth save of the season and second in a row.
