49ers vs. Packers Predictions, Picks & Odds: NFL Week 12, Sunday 11/24
The NFC is the wild west this year. You’d think that the Green Bay Packers at 7-3 would be sitting pretty while the San Francisco 49ers would be feeling alright at 5-5. But, because of how strong the NFC North and NFC West are, the Packers are third in their division. And the 49ers are last in theirs.
Each and every one of these games is crucial for both teams moving forward. But this is obviously a big one. A game you circle on the calendar. A game that you hope to see again in the NFL playoffs. And that makes our Week 12 49ers vs. Packers predictions all the more interesting. Especially with the 49ers missing their quarterback Brock Purdy this week.
Even if you just want to see the 49ers vs. Packers odds and have 49ers vs. Packers picks of your own, don’t forget to scroll down at the end to see how you can scoop up a $1,500 BetMGM Sportsbook sign-up bonus!
49ers vs. Packers Predictions For NFL Week 12, Sunday 11/17
These teams have met 73 times in this storied history. But the most recent meeting, in the NFC Divisional Playoff round late last January, is the meeting fresh on everyone’s mind. The 49ers won 24-21 and advanced to the NFC Conference Championship, largely on the back of Christian McCaffrey’s 128 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns.
This year, the Packers' three losses came Week 1 in Brazil to the Eagles then to the division foes in the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions, who are both ahead of them in the NFC North standings. The 49ers have had a tough schedule and injuries have not made things easier, with them dropping games to the Vikings, Rams, Cardinals, Seahawks, and Chiefs.
San Francisco 49ers: Brock Purdy Ruled Out
The big story here is Brock Purdy has been officially ruled out of this game with a shoulder issue. That means that Brandon Allen will be making the start for the 49ers. The spread had been tumbling with him out of practice and it finally settled in at +5.5 based on the news.
On the positive front, Christian McCaffrey is back and in a big way. They made sure he was fully healthy and ready to go then unleashed him in full with snap counts of 88% and 94%. To put that in perspective, Kyren Williams has averaged 88% of the snaps on the season and then no other back besides CMC is higher than 77%. Jauan Jennings returned from injury to take over Aiyuk’s role on the outside. And now Ricky Pearsall has assumed the Jauan Jennings role in the slot. George Kittle has been dealing with a hamstring injury but he is adamant that he will play this Sunday saying he “can’t pass up playing the Packers”.
On defense, the 49ers will once again be missing Charvarius Ward who is not yet ready to return following for tragic death of his daughter. Nick Bosa has also been ruled out - the 49ers pressure rate is noticeably lower in games without Bosa dropping from 33% to 18% per the BVM Sportsdesk.
Green Bay Packers: Loaded With Weapons
Even without Luke Musgrave, the Packers have drafted so well that they have a wealth of offensive weapons. Tucker Kraft was already starting over Musgrave as it stood. At wide receiver, they have Romeo Doubs on the outside with Christian Watson and Dontayvion Wicks operating opposite him with Jayden Reed manning the slot and offering gadget plays. Unfortunately, rookie RB MarShawn Lloyd ended up on the NFI list with appendicitis, but Josh Jacobs has been steamrolling teams on his own.
The Packers' defense suffered a tough blow recently when Jaire Alexander told reporters that he tore his PCL. That leaves his timetable to return uncertain but it’s hard to believe he will play this week. The Packers' defense has generally been middle of the pack but not having their top corner is obviously an issue.
49ers vs. Packers Odds, Spreads, Total & Betting Lines
As promised, the latest 49ers vs. Packers odds can be found below courtesy of BetMGM Sportsbook:
- Point Spread: San Francisco 49ers +5.5 (-110) vs. Green Bay Packers -5.5 (-110)
- Money Line: San Francisco 49ers (+190) vs. Green Bay Packers (-250)
- Game Total (Over/Under): Over 44.5 (-110) vs. Under 44.5 (-110)
49ers vs. Packers: San Francisco 49ers +5.5 (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook)
On the initial Brock Purdy news, the line moved from 49ers -1.5 to 49ers +3 but, with him ruled out, it has moved all the way to +5.5. Taking the 49ers and the points here is not necessarily saying that Brock Purdy is a system QB but it is showing my vote of confidence in Kyle Shanahan and the system. Some teams ask their quarterbacks to do a lot with their legs or throw deep into tight windows. The amount of motion, screens, gadget plays, and quick throws that Shanahan’s offense deploys makes things easier on the QB than some other schemes.
The Packers are missing their top corner in Jaire Alexander, they have struggled against the tight end this year without DeVondre Campbell (who is now actually with the Niners), and they have been so-so against the run. Even with the 49ers missing some key players, I believe in the ability of certain coaches and programs to compete. We’ve watched Mike Tomlin cobble together winning season after winning season with worse talent than what the 49ers have this weekend. A bet on them to cover is a vote of confidence in Kyle Shanahan.
