2024 Player Outlook
Purdy followed up his impressive rookie season with an offseason of question marks after he had elbow surgery to repair the UCL injury he suffered during the NFC Championship. How did he answer those questions? He went an completed 69.4% of his passes for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. He led the league in QBR, QB Rating and TD%. He was 4th in MVP voting and for a while he was looking like he might end up winning the award. With an impressive first full season under his belt, there is no reason to think he can't repeat. The 49ers offense is loaded with Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle. They then went and added Ricky Pearsall in the first round of the draft, an insurance policy in case they had to or planned to move on from Samuel or Aiyuk. Unless he throws for 40 touchdowns, the lack of rushing upside is going to likely prevent him from being a top five fantasy QB but I see no reason he isn't a guy that finishes inside the top 10 this season.
Player News
The Athletic’s Dianna Russini believes a deal between the 49ers and Brock Purdy is “closer than we think.”
Speaking on an episode of her Scoop City podcast, Russini highlights Purdy’s participation in OTAs as “evidence” that a deal is likely coming. While that opinion is largely speculative, she goes on to add that she’s been “doing some digging on it” and feels good about the direction negotations are heading in. It’s possible that Purdy reporting to OTAs is more a sign off good will than a signal to a deal being done, but we also saw George Kittle report to voluntary workouts shortly before he signed his new deal. Regardless, Purdy won’t go into the season on the contract he signed after being made the Mr. Irrelevant pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. In what was a down season for the 49ers in 2024, Purdy threw for 3,864-20-12 while adding a career-high 323 rushing yards and five touchdowns. He has the looks of a low-end QB1/high-end QB2 heading into the upcoming fantasy season.
Brock Purdy is at 49ers voluntary offseason conditioning.
The Athletic’s Michael Silver speculated that Purdy could miss early offseason work as the 49ers worked through a contract extension with the 25-year-old quarterback. It appears that the sides are fairly close on most of the issues, as Purdy isn’t opting to hold out in any way. The 49ers have not typically been hasty to get deals done early in the offseason, but perhaps they will make an exception for their quarterback.
The Athletic’s Michael Silver reports there is “some uncertainty” about whether Brock Purdy and George Kittle will show up for 49ers voluntary activities on Tuesday.
Both players are seeking a new contract this offseason. Silver reports that Purdy’s attendance could be a bellwether on how far away from a deal he and the 49ers are, with an absence being a sign that the team and player aren’t close at this time. Kittle is “much more of a longshot” as he and the 49ers, per Silver’s reporting, “remain far apart in discussions about a new deal.” The 49ers have tended to drag out contract extensions over the course of their recent offseasons — see Nick Bosa and Brandon Aiyuk for examples — so we wouldn’t be surprised if neither player reported for voluntary work. Hold-ins in training camp are also a possibility.
49ers owner Jed Yord said “When he’s ready, we’ll sit down and finish it ... it shouldn’t be that hard to do,” when asked about Brock Purdy’s extension.
Kyle Shanahan also mentioned that he hoped Purdy wouldn’t hold out of offseason workouts today. The general tenor of contract negotiations for Purdy is that it will get done, though it perhaps has not advanced as quickly as Purdy would have preferred. York’s comment about it happening “when he’s ready” is a bit eye-catching. But with the cuts that the 49ers have made this offseason, this isn’t really a matter of cap space so much as both sides actually agreeing on the numbers.
