Patriots vs. Jets Predictions For Thursday Night Football, NFL Week 3

The Patriots were the spoilers of plenty of survivor pools in Week 1, taking down the Cincinnati Bengals on the road, but followed it up with a loss in their home opener against the Seattle Seahawks. However, it took overtime to do so, as the Pats have looked more competitive than most expected heading into the season.

As for the Jets, they were able to get in the win column and see QB Aaron Rodgers earn his first victory with the team. It wasn’t the prettiest takedown of a mediocre Tennessee Titans team, but as they say, a win is a win. In terms of Rodgers specifically, it’s now his 17th straight season being able to avoid starting 0-2!

Both teams will be looking to break out of the .500 spot, so let’s go further into the storylines for each squad.

New England Patriots: Exceeding Expectations

Given how the Pats have looked overall since the departure of future Hall-of-Fame QB Tom Brady, their expectations have continued to dwindle. Now, without head coach Bill Belichick, expectations were even lower this season.

In fact, New England came in as one of the favorites to finish with the worst record in the entire NFL. While there is still plenty of season left, as of now, they have been stronger than anticipated. If there was any unit that was expected to be at least above average, it was their defense, even after the loss of LB Matthew Judon.

Even that unit has looked even better than many thought it could, which speaks to how well former LB Jerod Mayo has been leading this team as the new head coach.

New York Jets: Finding Consistency

New York may have started the season with a loss, but it was across the country in San Francisco on Monday Night Football against the 49ers, who were just in overtime in the Super Bowl last season. In other words, it was far from the worst loss we’ll see all season.

On the flip side, their win over the Titans was less than groundbreaking, albeit on the road. Their offense was rather run-of-the-mill, relying on a few explosive plays from RB Breece Hall and WR Garrett Wilson. Between 176 passing yards from Rodgers and 101 total rushing yards, they weren’t exactly moving the ball up and down the field.

Therefore, it seems as though New York will still be relying on their defense to carry them, which absolutely plays a part in the best bet from our Patriots vs. Jets predictions.

Patriots vs. Jets Odds, Spreads, Total & Betting Lines

As we get into that best bet, we also want to make sure that you’ve seen the latest Patriots vs. Jets odds courtesy of BetMGM Sportsbook first:

Patriots vs. Jets Game Total: Under 38.5 (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

That’s right - we have one of the lowest totals of the season thus far, and we’re still focused on the under with our Patriots vs. Jets predictions. Thanks to BetMGM, we’re also getting a favorable number, as it’s already as low as 37.5 points on some platforms.

Regardless, we wouldn’t be surprised to see fewer than 30 points scored. After all, that is exactly how each of the last three meetings between these AFC East rivals have gone. Those matchups ended with final scores of 10-3, 15-10 and 17-3, with the Pats actually being the ones to win two of them.

That is another reason we’d prefer to avoid a point spread hovering around the key number of seven, and there are two teams that are built around their defense. Admittedly, New York still needs to improve in that department in terms of the ground game, but New England simply doesn’t have the overall firepower to fully exploit them.

We expect them to rely on the running game behind RB Rhamondre Stevenson, which should also help slow the game down. Jets RB Breece Hall looked the part in Week 2 as well, so with both teams leaning on the ground game, fewer possessions mean fewer opportunities for points.

With that in mind, the best bet from our Patriots vs. Jets predictions is under 38.5 points (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook).
