Commanders signed DE Deatrich Wise, formerly of the Patriots, to a one-year, $5 million contract.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the deal is worth up to $5 million. Wise is a veteran defensive lineman who has spent all eight years in the NFL with the Patriots. With 34 career sacks mostly as a rotational pass rusher, Wise adds value to a defensive line that just released Jonathan Allen. The 30-year-old will join the rotation for a budding Commanders team in 2025.
Patriots re-signed DL Deatrich Wise to a four-year, $30 million extension.
It includes $10 million guaranteed, and it's another one of those "up to" $30 million contracts. Desperate to improve their defense, the Pats didn't want to compound matters by letting soon-to-be 27-year-old Wise walk. He contributed 564 snaps on defense last season, and has 56 career quarterback hits. Wise is entering what should be his prime and has always been versatile for coach Bill Belichick.
Wise recorded one strip-sack across 20 defensive snaps in Sunday's win over the Steelers.
Wise played rotationally on the defensive line as his snap count accounts for just 29 percent of the defensive reps in the contest. He was still able to make his impact felt, as he knocked the ball loose from Ben Roethlisberger, though the Steelers were able to recover.
Wise (ankle) was activated from New England's Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, Doug Kyed of NESN.com reports.
Wise missed the Patriots' spring offseason program with an ankle injury he sustained towards the end of last season. The 25-year-old is expected to contribute heavily to the Patriots' defensive front unless third-round pick Chase Winovich can eat into his snaps.
