Jaguars vs. Bills Predictions For Sunday Night Football 8:20 PM ET, NFL Week 3

These teams have squared off twice since Trevor Lawrence has been drafted - they played last year as well as in 2021. And the Jaguars actually won both games. Yes, in 2021 when the Jaguars won three games on the season, one of them was against the Buffalo Bills (who won the AFC East that year and went to the playoffs). These teams are obviously very different today than they were then but thought that was kind of interesting.

This week the Jaguars will once again be the underdogs as they travel up to Buffalo to try to beat the Bills for the third time in a row. Through two games, the Jaguars are 0-2 and the Bills 2-0. The Jaguars obviously need to right the ship but the Bills also have some tweaking to do to get this team where they want it to be.

Jacksonville Jaguars: All On Trevor Lawrence

The Jaguars defense has honestly done it’s job for the most part. Last week they held the Cleveland Browns to 18 points. The week prior they held the explosive Miami Dolphins (with a healthy Tua) to 20 points. Those are winnable conditions in the NFL. But the Jaguars have averaged only 15 points a game with Trevor Lawrence only throwing one touchdown pass.

They’ll also be without a key piece of their offense - 2023 NFL tight end target leader Evan Engram. He suffered a hamstring injury in pre-game workouts last week and missed practice all week so he’s expected to be out. This is a shame for the Jaguars as the Bills are currently missing two of their starting linebackers. Second-year tight end Brenton Strange will be asked to step up in Engram’s place.

Rookie wideout Brian Thomas has been the most exciting part of the Jaguars offense so far but the Jaguars need to get key pieces like Travis Etienne and Christian Kirk going in this one. Kirk was especially disappointing last week as he was expected to step up with Engram out yet actually finished the day with -1 receiving yards. That’s not going to cut it against an elite Bills defense, even without their linebackers.

Buffalo Bills: Joe Brady Ground And Pound

This Bills offense looks quite a bit different with the departure of Stefon Diggs. And, so far, it’s working. They have been leaning more on the run game and, through two games so far,  James Cook has 2 rushing touchdowns (and another through the air) while Josh Allen also has two rushing touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the passing game looks completely different compared to the days when they would force it to Stefon Diggs. No player has more than 100 yards through two games and no player has more than one touchdown. Despite playing less than 60% of the snaps so far on the season, Khalil Shakir leads the team with 8 catches for 96 yards. Given the game scripts so far, the Bills have only attempted 42 passes which is the second-fewest in the league. To put that in perspective, the Lions have attempted double that with 84. Perhaps this is the game where they ramp that up and we see more Dalton Kincaid?

On defense, the big story has been injuries to linebackers Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard. The secondary has been playing well and the crew of Greg Rousseau, Von Miller, and Ed Oliver can create plenty of pressure up front but they could be weak in the intermediate area. Luckily, the Jaguars are missing their best weapon in that range with Evan Engram out.

Jaguars vs. Bills: Game Total Over 46.5 (-115 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

If you’ve been listening to what the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff has been saying all week, you should be excited as a football fan. They essentially looked back at the first two games a realized that the offense looked best when they went uptempo against the Cleveland Browns. And offensive coordinator Press Taylor has spoken about simplifying the offense and where/when to run no huddle with reporters this week.

The two teams with the fewest pass attempts so far in the NFL both rank in the bottom five for pace of play. The Saints, with 40 attempts, are the slowest team and the Bills, with 42 attempts are 5th. The game last week vs. the Dolphins was essentially over the moment Tua Tagovailoa got hurt so it was easy for the Bills to bleed the clock.

Maybe the Jaguars completely fall flat and Joe Brady can run his new slow-motion offense once again. But a lack of urgency almost cost them the game in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals before they kicked it in gear. I think the Jaguars take advantage of the lack of linebacker depth over the middle with a fast-paced attack in that region. And I think this is the week the Bills take some deep shots against Jaguars safeties. Out of 113 safeties graded so far by Pro Football Focus, Antonio Johnson ranks 104th and Andre Cisco ranks 111th. Give me the over in this one.

With all that said we’re confident in taking the over 46.5 points (-110) at BetMGM Sportsbook as the best bet from our Jaguars vs. Bills predictions.
