MLB Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 5/28
Twins vs. Rays Predictions
In the early afternoon window today, there’s going to be a hell of a pitchers' duel underway, and it’s the Twins and Rays going at it for the final time in their series. Drew Rasmussen will start for the home team, and he’s been excellent in the month of May, allowing just 6 runs over 21.1 innings pitched and only 17 total hits! In addition to that, he is riding a shutout streak over the past 12 innings, so the Twins' offense will be facing an uphill climb.
On the mound for Minnesota will be Pablo Lopez, and he’s been awesome all season long with an ERA of 2.31 and 54 strikeouts over 50.2 innings pitched. He also allowed just 1 run over his last 11.2 innings pitched. His play will be needed as the Twins' offense has gone cold in the last 5 games, scoring only 15 runs, and they should struggle again today. Give me the under on the runs for the 1st 5 innings while these two pitchers are out there on the mound.
In addition to betting on a lack of runs, I also like Lopez to rack up some strikeouts against a Rays team that is 8th in team K-rate at 22.6% against right-handed pitchers. His line today is 5.5 strikeouts, and seeing as he’s done this in 6 of his last 7 starts and averages over a K per inning, I think he gets the job done again today for us wagerers.
Pick: Twins & Rays 1st 5 Innings Under 4.5 Runs (-145 on DraftKings)
Pick: Pablo Lopez (MIN) Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-130 on DraftKings)
Marlins vs. Padres Predictions
It gives me no joy to say this here today, but Sandy Alcantara is a bad pitcher right now. The road back from his injury has been a rocky one, and he’s still not fully there, so we have to attack that. The former ace has an ERA of 7.71 in the month of May, allowing 19 runs and 23 hits over just 4 starts, and it's hard to see that getting better today against this behemoth of a San Diego lineup.
Over the last 3 games, the Padres have snapped out of their slump and have posted 17 total runs in 3 straight wins, and today they’ll be going for the series sweep. It could be a tough ask, though, to bet on the Padres at -165, so instead I am going to invest in the total as Kyle Hart will start for the Padres, and he’s not very good. In his 5 starts this season, Hart has an ERA of 6.00 and has just 16 strikeouts, and has allowed 23 hits over 21 innings pitched. The Marlins' offense isn’t dynamic, but they should have enough to disrupt the Padres starter. The total sits at 8.5 runs, and that’s an over I will just have to take.
In addition to the total, let’s grab a Padre bat to help us get there! Alcantara has allowed a batting average of .348 in road starts this season, and he’s bad against both lefties and righties, so let’s just pick the hottest hitter. That hitter would be Manny Machado, who is hitting .357 with a 1.169 OPS over the past 7 games, which includes 3 home runs, 10 hits, and 6 runs scored. His hits/runs/RBIs prop is juiced a bit at -150, but to go over 1.5 the way he is hitting just seems like a slam dunk bet to make.
Pick: Marlins & Padres Over 8.5 Runs (-105 on DraftKings)
Pick: Manny Machado (SD) Over 1.5 Hits/Runs/RBIs (-150 on DraftKings)
Best MLB Prop Bets & Other Picks Today, 5/28
Pick: Brent Rooker (ATH) Over 1.5 Hits/Runs/RBIs (-115 on DraftKings)
Pick: Cal Raleigh (SEA) Over 1.5 Hits/Runs/RBIs (-145 on DraftKings)
Pick: Phillies Money Line (-150 on DraftKings)
Pick: Giants & Tigers Over 7.5 Runs (-115 on DraftKings)
Player News
Corbin Carroll doubled and tripled in a win for the Diamondbacks on Monday over the Padres.
Getting to play your home games in Arizona and being faster than the overwhelming majority of players gives you a good chance to pile up the triples, and Carroll has done just that with 10 already before the All-Star break. The 24-year-old also doubled while improving his season slash to .250/.332/.563. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Carroll approached 20-plus three-baggers someday. It could even be 2025.
Manny Machado homered while going 3-for-5 in a 6-3 loss for the Padres on Monday to the Diamondbacks.
Kevin Ginkel was credited with a save after firing a scoreless ninth against the Padres on Monday.
Zac Gallen struck out nine over six innings while allowing only an unearned run to get a win over the Padres on Monday.
Yu Darvish gave up two runs over 3 2/3 innings with five strikeouts in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Monday.
Travis d’Arnaud homered and drove in three runs to help the Angels to a win over the Rangers on Monday.
