DFS Lineup Construction Thoughts

We have a massive 12-game slate that includes names like Jack Hughes and Auston Matthews. It’s easy to pay up for the big names, but NHL DFS is all about finding value plays. There is no shortage of options to choose from so we mustn’t miss anything important. As always, we need to pick the right goalie. Let’s take a look at some options worth considering.

Recommended DFS Starting Goalies

Top Options for Saves

Jacob Markstrom vs. Los Angeles Kings

Juuse Saros vs. Ottawa Senators

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen vs. Florida Panthers

Best Odds for a Win

Nico Daws vs. San Jose Sharks

Sergei Bobrovsky vs. Buffalo Sabres

Alex Lyon vs. Washington Capitals

Favorite Goalies to Use for DFS Lineups

Nico Daws, G, New Jersey Devils

It’s definitely a choice to pay $8,600 for a goalie on DraftKings that has a 3.30 GAA and a .895 SV%. Nico Daws is expected to get the start for the Devils and he has an elite matchup against San Jose. If you’re rocking him in a cash game lineup, you’re off to a good start.

Juuse Saros, G, Nashville Predators

Juuse Saros has struggled at home this season--posting a 3.19 GAA and a .896 SV%-- but he gets to face an Ottawa team that is playing on back-to-back nights and that loves to shoot the puck. The Predators should be able to score more than enough goals to help their star goalie get the win.

Alex Lyon, G, Detroit Red Wings

Alex Lyon has won his last three starts and has an 11-4-2 record on home ice with a 2.32 GAA and a .926 SV%. Washington is playing their second game in as many nights and is one of the worst teams when it comes to scoring goals on the road. Lyon is a fantastic option in all formats.

Sam Montembeault, G, Montreal Canadiens

It’s always a challenge to trust a Montreal Canadiens goalie, but Sam Montembeault is a fine choice tonight. Arizona has lost 12 games in a row and they will be without one of their last players, Clayton Keller. Montembeault has a 2.77 GAA and a .920 SV% on home ice, so he’s more than capable of getting the job done.

Jake Oettinger, G, Dallas Stars

If you’re looking for a goalie with high upside for a GPP, Jake Oettinger is your guy. Colorado is the highest-scoring team on home ice, but Dallas is an above-average defensive team. Oettinger also has some pretty good numbers on the road, posting a 2.60 GAA and a .918 SV%.

It’s a tough task for him, but if he keeps his goals against below two and stops over 35 shots, then he can hit value without having to pick up the win.

Recommended DFS Skaters

Highest Expected Goal Totals

New Jersey Devils vs. Mackenzie Blackwood (4.1)

Detroit Red Wings vs. Charlie Lindgren (3.8)

Florida Panthers vs. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (3.7)

Favorite Skaters to Use for DFS Lineups

Auston Matthews, C, Toronto Maple Leafs

Here’s a fun fact: Auston Matthews has 28 goals in 26 home games this season and is shooting a ridiculous 24%. The man is on pace for well over 70 goals and just can’t be stopped. I know the matchup against Vegas looks tough, but honestly, he’s matchup-proof and is worth every dollar of his $10K price tag.

Jack Hughes, C, New Jersey Devils

Jack Hughes has one goal in his last five games, so it feels like he’s due to score tonight against San Jose. We know the Sharks are miserable and that Hughes loves to shoot. His floor is going to be high, but he still needs a goal or multiple points to hit value and he can certainly do that.

Filip Forsberg, W, Nashville Predators

Filip Forsberg missed morning skate but there is no danger of him missing tonight’s game. His numbers on the road are better than at home, but he’s still an elite player who loves to shoot the puck and the Senators are just a mess defensively and in goal. $8,100 is a tad more than I’d like to spend, but it’s still hard to pass up on a player with that much upside.

Brandon Hagel, W, Tampa Bay Lightning

When did Brandon Hagel become elite? The man has 15 points in the last ten games and is seeing over 22 minutes of ice time in the last four games. He’s up to 58 points on the season but DraftKings has him priced at $5,400 tonight.

We know that Tampa Bay struggles on the road, but the Flyers will be without Jamie Drysdale and Travois Konecny, and their goaltending has been questionable since Carter Hart left the team, so don’t be surprised when Hagel put up another solid performance.

Roman Josi, D, Nashville Predators

Roman Josi isn’t blocking as many shots over his last five games, but he’s still an offensive threat and his matchup on paper is elite. It might feel expensive to pair him with Forsberg, but that would be a great mini-stack in all formats.

Thomas Harley, D, Dallas Stars

How is DK still giving up Thomas Harley at a discount price? I know the Stars are playing on back-to-back nights and they have to go into Colorado, but Harley has been amazing this season and he can do so many things.

He’s a cheaper version of Josi, but he can hit value without having to register a point. I’d like to see him shoot the puck more, but I’m just being picky. He’s a great play in a GPP as a single-bullet.
