Ravens vs. Buccaneers Predictions For NFL Week 7, Monday 10/21

Like most out-of-conference matchups, these teams only play every four years unless they find themselves in a Super Bowl. And that’s never happened so the last time these two teams faced was 2022. That was in the Tom Brady era before Baker Mayfield took over so no meaningful data to be drawn there.

After a turbulent 0-2 start the Ravens have been white hot. They’ve knocked off the Cowboys, Bills, Bengals, and Commanders in four straight weeks. The Buccaneers have had an interesting start themselves defeating tough teams like the Eagles, Commanders, and Lions while falling to teams like the Broncos and Falcons. They’ll square off this weekend at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay.

Baltimore Ravens: Hottest Team In Football?

Any concerns about the Ravens being a “one-dimensional” team went out the window the last two weeks. They clearly don’t need to rely solely on Derrick Henry as Lamar Jackson threw for 300+ yards in back-to-back weeks. He currently sits as the QB1 overall in fantasy football. Zay Flowers has been his top target while the tight end group has combined to provide solid production even if it’s not the same guy week in and week out.

The Ravens this year have been one of the top defenses against the run. In fact, the 59 rush yards per game they are allowing is the fewest of any team. They’ve allowed some hiccups in the passing game, especially early on, but the unit still ranks toward the middle of the pack in DVOA. The Buccaneer's best bet this week will be through the air.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: All About Baker Mayfield

We mentioned that Lamar Jackson currently sits as the QB1 in fantasy football - well, Baker Mayfield in the QB2. Liam Coen’s scheme works perfectly towards his skillset of getting the ball out quickly and Chris Godwin has thrived under these conditions (he’s currently the WR1 in PPR formats). Mike Evans has not yet practiced this week so we’ll have to monitor his status going into the weekend.

Running back has been interesting for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Rachaad White struggled early which allowed Bucky Irving to emerge. Then, when White missed last week, Sean Tucker put on a show with two touchdowns. Now the Bucs coaching staff has told us they will use the “hot hand approach” to the position moving forward which could be fine for gambling but certainly not ideal for fantasy football.

The Buccaneers defense has been solid, ranking 11th overall in DVOA per FTN Fantasy (9th vs the pass and 11th vs the run). The key question is what shape cornerback Jamel Dean will be on gameday as he’s been dealing with an ankle issue.

Ravens vs. Buccaneers: Over 49.5 -110 (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

Typically we don’t like taking the over when the over/under is close to 50. A lot needs to go right for BOTH teams for that to happen. The thing is, a lot has been going right for both of these teams. And the team compositions are conducive to high scoring games.

The Ravens run defense has been arguably the best in the world. And the Buccaneers are going to attempt a three-headed monster approach here which could prevent anyone from getting things going. We saw the Bengals two-headed backfield stall against this Ravens defense so what did they do? Throw the ball to their two star receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, who each scored two touchdowns. Mike Evans is dealing with a hamstring injury but is expected to play and Chris Godwin is currently leading the league in receptions, second in yards, and tied for the touchdown lead with 5.

I’m not necessarily saying that we’ll have 79 total points here like we saw with the Bengals-Ravens. But we don’t need ~80 points - we need 50. The Buccaneers are going to have trouble stopping the Ravens, especially if Jamel Dean is out. We just need Baker to hold up his end of the bargain. His 15 touchdown passes are three more than the next highest player so he’s been holding it down so far. We’re going with the over.
