Division games are always important. But right now, with the state of the NFC West, they are more important than ever. All four teams have four losses. The Cardinals, 49ers, and Seahawks are 4-4 while the Rams are 3-4, having already had their bye week. This winner of this game could potentially go into Week 9 leading the NFC West.

And, as we all know, division games are a different beast when it comes to betting. Luckily that gives us a decent history between these two teams to work with. Let’s dig into the data and narratives to see what kind of Week 9 Rams vs. Seahawks predictions we can make!

Rams vs. Seahawks Predictions For NFL Week 9, Sunday 11/3

Being division rivals, these teams face off twice a year but have actually played seven times over the last three years as they met in the playoffs in 2021. The Rams have won five of the last seven, including the two most recent matchups during the 2023 season (though the most recent matchup was a close one with a score of 17-16).

The Rams have picked up some tough wins against the 49ers and Vikings (and an easy one against the Raiders) but fell to the Bears, Packers, Cardinals, and Lions. The Seahawks have taken care of most of the opponents they are supposed to with the Broncos, Patriots, and Dolphins (without Tua Tagovailoa). They won a statement game against the Atlanta Falcons. But they’ve lost to the tough teams in the 49ers, Bills, and Lions. And also dropped one they were heavy favorites against the Giants.

Los Angeles Rams: Will Puka Nacua Play?

It’s tough when a star player is a true question mark for the game. We saw last week what kind of impact Puka Nacua can have on this Rams offense. Obviously, Cooper Kupp is a star who almost single-handedly dragged this team to a Super Bowl victory. But it’s another level of dynamic with Nacua out there.

Head coach Sean McVay told reporters that there is no structural damage to the knee.  Which is great news. And it has us hopeful that Nacua will be a go. The Rams still have solid weapons with Kupp, Kyren Williams, Demarcus Robinson, and Tutu Atwell so it wouldn’t be the end of the world. But it could make a difference in covering the spread or not.

On the other side of the ball, the Rams defense has struggled. They are currently ranked 28th in DVOA per FTN Fantasy (27th vs. the run and 28th vs. the pass). As we saw in the Lions overtime where David Montgomery closed it out, they are certainly missing Aaron Donald up the middle. Though Jared Verse has been a solid addition.

Seattle Seahawks: Missing DK Metcalf

The Seahawks have their own injury woes, with star split end DK Metcalf set to miss this week’s game. That elevates Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba to full-time roles with Jake Bobo coming on to play split end in three wide receiver sets. They’ll also be without tight end Noah Fant so rookie AJ Barner will have to step up.

On defense the Seahawks have been solid against the pass with Tariq Woolen leading the way. But they have struggled a bit against the run, as was highlighted last week by the success of James Cook. They’ll need to bottle up Kyren Williams in this one to stand a chance.

When asked whether he expected Puka Nacua to play this week, Sean McVay said he “wouldn’t be against it”. So we won’t. And, quite honestly, I like the Rams to win this one whether or not Puka Nacua is playing.

The bottom line here is that the Seahawks offense simply does not look as dynamic without DK Metcalf out there. The Ryan Grubb offense is a true 11 personnel offense that relies heavily on three WR sets, one RB, and a two-way tight end. DK Metcalf is in the Rome Odunze role from Washington and Jake Bobo is simply not that caliber of player. We are worried about the Rams maybe not having Nacua when the Seahawks are already guaranteed to not have Metcalf or Fant.

The Rams have beaten tough teams like the 49ers and Vikings. They took the Lions to overtime. The Seahawks have failed most of their tough tests including losing to both of those common opponents in the 49ers and Lions. We’re going with the Rams regardless of whether Puka Nacua suits up. But that would be a nice bonus.
