Cowboys vs. 49ers Predictions, Picks & Odds: NFL Week 8 Sunday Night Football
There are a handful of games on the schedule you circle. This is one of those games. Obviously your division rivals come first. But there are teams within your conference that you know are your true competition to make it to the big game. San Francisco vs. Dallas is one of those games.
It would be nice if both teams were at full strength but that’s not quite the case here. Which adds an additional wrinkle to our Cowboys vs. 49ers predictions for Week 8 Sunday Night Football. We’ll have to dig through the data and do a little projecting for what we can expect to see this weekend with some key players out.

Cowboys vs. 49ers Predictions For NFL Week 8, Sunday 10/27
As both of these teams are Super Bowl contenders, they find themselves playing fairly often. They played both in the regular season last year and in the Divisional Playoff round. They also met in the Wild Card Playoff round the previous year. And the San Franscio 49ers won all three of those matchups. The last time the Cowboys beat the 49ers was in 2020 in a matchup whre Andy Dalton was the Cowboys QB against Nick Mullens for the 49ers.
This year both teams have some work to do if they want to meet in the playoffs again. The Cowboys are 3-3 having beat the Browns, Giants, and Steelers but lost to the Saints, Ravens, and Lions. The 49ers of 3-4 with wins over the Jets, Patriots, and Seahawks but losses to the Cardinals, Rams, Vikings, and Chiefs. They’ll meet this week in San Francisco.
Dallas Cowboys: Missing Defensive Stars Micah Parsons and DeRon Bland
The Dallas Cowboys were banking on their defense keeping them in games this year. They lost some key pieces on offense like Tyron Smith, Tyler Biadisz, and Tony Pollard. And they really did not add much via free agency or the draft so they’re relying on CeeDee Lamb, Jalen Tolbert, Jake Ferguson, and Rico Dowdle to make things happen.
The problem with relying on the defense is that they are missing their best two players with corner DeRon Bland and linebacker Micah Parsons. That would explain some pass rush and coverage issues but it does not explain why the Cowboys are a bottom five team against the run this year, allowing 143.2 yards per game so far.
San Francisco 49ers: Without Offensive Stars Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk
The 49ers injury woes are on the other side of the ball. They were already missing star pass-catcher Christian McCaffrey. Then they lost Brandin Aiyuk to an ACL tear. On top of that, Jauan Jennings has already been ruled out as well and Deebo Samuel has been sick with pneumonia which actually landed him in the hospital. He and George Kittle are currently listed as questionable so rookie first round pick Ricky Pearsall could be asked to do quite a bit in only his second ever NFL game.
The defense for the 49ers has been good, as always, especially against the pass. They rank 3rd in DVOA against the pass per FTN Fantasy which has then ranked 6th overall even if they haven’t been fantastic against the run. The defensive unit is far healthier than the offense though slot corner Deommodore Lenoir is questionable for this week. He popped up with an illness which could push Renardo Green into action as the nickel corner.

As football fans, we generally want Sunday Night Football to be exciting with a lot of points scored. It’s the only game on, after all. But I don’t think that will be the case this Sunday Night.
The 49ers are dealing with some health issues with their pass-catchers but they might not need them this week. The 49ers crushing run game led by Trent Williams could be problematic for the struggling Cowboys run defense. Nose tackle Mazi Smith will often be Jordan Mason’s first read as part of their inside zone attack. If you take all front seven personnel in the NFL that have played at least 75 run snaps, that’s 300 players. Per Pro Football Focus, Mazi Smith grades out at 299. His counterpart, Linval Joseph, is 298.
On the flip side, the 49ers are arguably the best team against the tight end with Fred Warner and DeVondre Campbell. They just held Travis Kelce to 17 yards so Jake Ferguson could be in for a long day. With the 49ers run defense being so good, CeeDee Lamb needs to go nuclear tomorrow for the Cowboys to stand a chance. And he’s capable of doing that but I think a one-dimensional Cowboys offense vs. a run-heavy 49ers team is the perfect recipe for the under.
