Commanders vs. Buccaneers Predictions, Picks & Odds: NFL Wild Card Sunday

These two teams are in different phases of the NFL cycle. The Buccaneers are an older team hoping to “run it back” with guys like Mike Evans, Baker Mayfield, Lavonte David, and Sterling Shepard. Guys like Evans and David only have so many shots left at glory.
The Commanders on the other hand have a new regime and a rookie quarterback. They are playing with “house money” at this stage as making it this far has been a pleasant surprise. Once you are in the tournament anything can happen though so we’ll need to dig into all the data, narratives, and injuries for our Commanders vs. Buccaneers Wild Card Sunday predictions!

Commanders vs. Buccaneers Predictions For NFL Wildcard Sunday
These teams don’t square off particularly often given that they aren’t in the same division. But they did happen to play this year in Week One which marks the first time since 2021. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won that one 37-20 but that was also back when Chris Godwin was healthy and playing at a high level. And it was before the Commanders traded for Marshon Lattimore.
The Buccaneers won the NFC South, in large part because they won six of their last seven games. Their lone loss came to the Dallas Cowboys 26-24. The Commanders have won five of their last six with their loss oddly also coming to the Dallas Cowboys, 23-19.
Washington Commanders: The New Regime Commanders
The Dan Snyder era is over and what a better way to start off than a playoff berth? The Washington Commanders seemingly knocked the Jayden Daniels pick out of the park as the potential NFL Rookie of the Year. They are a little top heavy on offense, leaning on Terry McLaurin, Zach Ertz, and Brian Robinson, so it really boils down to Daniels and his key players.
On defense the Commanders have had their struggles. Adding Marshon Lattimore via trade was a big boost to the pass D. But they have really struggled against the run. FTN Fantasy has them ranked as a bottom five team per their DVOA statistic.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Baker Mayfield Resurgence
Baker Mayfield has proven to his detractors that his season last year was not a fluke. And he has made himself a rich man by hitting all of the incentives the team set for him, finishing as a top 10 QB in virtually every category. The loss of Chris Godwin hurts but rookie Jalen McMillan has stepped up opposite Mike Evans. Bucky Irving has taken the starting job and run with it though Rachaad White still helps in the pass game.
On defense, the Buccaneers have been fairly one sided. They have been great against the run, thanks in large part to the large Vita Vea. The pass has been a different story as they allow the fourth most yards per game of any defense.
Commanders vs. Buccaneers Odds, Spreads, Total & Betting Lines
As promised, the latest Commanders vs. Buccaneers odds can be found below courtesy of BetMGM Sportsbook:
- Point Spread: Washington Commanders +3 (-110) vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers -3 (-110)
- Money Line: Washington Commanders (+140) vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-165)
- Game Total (Over/Under): Over 50.5 (-110) vs. Under 50.5 (-110)
Commanders vs. Buccaneers: Bucky Irving Over 91.5 (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook)
At one point this line was as low as 86.5 though the juice to take the over was a lot higher. We don’t really mind the higher number here at -110 because conditions are perfect for Bucky Irving to have a monster game. Mike Evans will have his hands full with his rival Marshon Lattimore. And I know Bucky Irving is not Saquon Barkley, but Irving has had games lately where he’s pushing those kinds of numbers - over his last five healthy games he’s had games of 89, 113, 117, and 152 yards. And Barkley, against this Commanders team, ran for 147 and 150 yards.
Bucky himself, in Week One against the Commanders when he wasn’t even crowned the starter yet, had 62 yards on only 9 carries which is 6.9 yards per carry. I think the books have this game capped well in general. I think the Buccaneers win but I don’t like the three-point spread. I think it could be a shootout but that 50.5 over/under is high. What I believe in most is that the Buccaneers can take advantage of a weak Commanders run defense with a big day from Bucky Irving. So that’s where we are going.

Player News
Packers signed WR Bo Melton, RB Emanuel Wilson, and P Daniel Whelan to their exclusive rights free agent tenders.
Melton caught on with the Packers in 2023, totaling 16 receptions for 218 yards and a touchdown in five games. He added eight receptions for 91 yards in 17 games last season. Melton will continue to be a depth piece in an already-deep Packers wide receiver room. Wilson has also been with the Packers for two seasons and rushed for 502 yards and four touchdowns as Josh Jacobs’ immediate backup last season. He will compete with MarShawn Lloyd for that role again. Whelan is the team’s punter and will be back for 2025. All three signed their exclusive rights free agent tender and will essentially be on one-year contracts this season.
Seahawks re-signed Johnathan Hankins to a one-year contract.
Hankins hasn’t had a PFF run defense grade above 52.4 since 2020 and is primarily called on to play early downs. He turned 33 in March. He’ll be a complimentary piece behind Jarran Reed and Byron Murphy II if he makes the roster out of training camp.
Chargers placed the UFA tender on RB J.K. Dobbins.
This gives the Chargers exclusive negotiating rights if he does not sign with a team by July 22 or the first 2025 NFL training camp opens, whichever comes first. The tag is mainly useful for compensatory pick reasons as Dobbins will still count towards Los Angeles’ haul in the formula if signed before then. The Chargers currently do not project to add a pick in 2026 per Over The Cap’s Nick Korte.
49ers signed OT D.J. Humphries.
Humphries played in only two games for the Chiefs last year as he spent most of the season rehabbing a late 2023 torn ACL on his own. He wasn’t appreciably good in either of those games, but he was rusty and does have a history of better than that. Entering his age-32 season for the 49ers, he’ll probably be trying to win the right tackle job opposite Trent Williams in training camp.
Patriots released LS Joe Cardona.
The team selected his replacement, Julian Ashby, in the seventh round of the draft. This snapper of balls who are longer than usual is only 33, and it’s possible he picks up his career elsewhere. There aren’t too many remaining Patriots Regimes in the wild in 2025, but Nick Caserio does still run the Texans and they let Jon Weeks walk this offseason so that’s one speculative fit.
NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill said he would be “flabbergasted” if Derek Carr played for the Saints this year.
“I would have trouble understanding why you would allow that to happen, you’re trying to build a new culture, you can’t let that guy ... you just got a rookie QB, this is the example you’re going to give him,” Underhill continued. Both Underhill and Mike Triplett believe Tyler Shough will be starting for the Saints in Week 1, with Underhill saying he had “80 percent or higher odds to start 80 percent of the games this year.” Shough would be an uninspiring superflex pick, perhaps a QB3, but given how things have played out with Carr over the past months it sure doesn’t seem like the Saints have a reason to want to continue this relationship. Mickey Loomis literally asked reporters to stop asking him Carr questions at his pre-draft press conference.
