Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The New England Patriots, once the league's premier “dynasty” now does not have a single home game that isn’t at 1 PM ET. In fact, they have no Sunday or Monday night game - they have a Thursday game on the road against the Jets and a game in London against the Jaguars. And deservedly so.

The Cincinnati Bengals on the other hand are a team of hope. They’ve got the pieces though they’ve yet to all come together for a season. Perhaps this is the year? Patriots vs. Bengals Week One predictions should be fairly easy at face value, but this matchup might have some surprises lurking, as we’ll discuss.

Patriots vs. Bengals Predictions For NFL Week 1, Sunday 9/8

At one point this offseason, the spread for this game was up to 9.5 points. And not without merit given the direction these teams are trending in. The Patriots have a new regime as part of a complete tear-down and rebuild that saw them trade away star player Matthew Judon. The Bengals are squarely in their win-now window, with sights set on not just the division but a championship.

However, recent turns of events have brought that spread closer over the last couple weeks. Jacoby Brissett being named the Patriots Week One starter does put a fairly reliable (albeit boring) signal-caller at the helm of the Pats. The Bengals have also dealt with a hectic offseason that leaves serious question-marks about the health and availability of some of the key cogs of this machine.

New England Patriots: The Jacoby Brissett Era(?)

Patriots fans and fantasy football gamers alike can hopefully admit that they were HOPING that Drake Maye would start while also understanding why it will be Jacoby Brissett. We’ve seen too many young quarterbacks “ruined” by throwing them into an unfavorable situation. And this is about as unfavorable as you can get.

Even on good teams, a rookie QB’s confidence can be shot, and bad habits can form. With the Island of Misfit Toys, they have for weapons and the atrocious offensive line, it’s smart to let Maye sit a couple of games out here. He can at least watch how a veteran prepares the team - especially going on the road for Week One.

On the defensive side the Patriots seemed more promising. They do have some nice pieces in Christian Gonzalez and Kyle Dugger. But they lost defensive lineman Christian Barmore to blood clots then traded Matthew Judon to the Falcons over a contract dispute so it could be rough sledding up front for New England.

Cincinnati Bengals: How Much Will Tee Higgins & Ja'Marr Chase Play?

For a team loaded with superstars, the Cincinnati Bengals oddly feel like one of those science projects that were thrown together at the last minute. Maybe they did not know that the season deadline was coming due? Tee Higgins ended his holdout just in time for Ja'Marr Chase to start his. And, like the San Francisco 49ers with their holdouts, things weren’t resolved until the final hour.

In that final hour, not only has Ja'Marr Chase said he might be limited this week after missing all of practice this month, but Tee Higgins is also now doubtful following a hamstring injury. That’s not great after losing Tyler Boyd this offseason via free agency. They are hoping their tackles, Orlando Brown and Trent Brown, can stay healthy and put any character questions from the past behind them. They’re also banking on Zack Moss and Chase Brown being able to replicate the production they’d typically bank on from Joe Mixon.

The Bengals defense was rough last year ranking 26th against the run and 28th against the past. They brought in some help like defensive tackle Sheldon Rankings but they’re probably a middle of the pack unit at best. They’ll rely on their offense to win games this year.

Patriots vs. Bengals Game Total: Under 40.5 (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

It doesn’t look amazing for the Bengals, we admit that. But there’s really no underestimating how bad this Patriots offensive line is. You’d need to be a magician to succeed behind this unit. Jacoby Brissett is a solid journeyman but he’s not Harry Houdini. The Patriots are going to STRUGGLE to move the ball.

Without Christian Barmore and Matthew Judon, the Bengals can probably run the ball to a fairly easy victory here. Plus, Andrei Losivas can likely pick up the slack left by Tee Higgins and Jermaine Burton is a promising young rookie. Ja'Marr Chase playing half the game is likely plenty enough to take care of business.

Betting the Patriots to cover might have been interesting at 9 but 7.5 simply isn’t enough. The Bengals likely want to just get through this game, settle things with the Ja'Marr Chase contract, and get everyone healthy. They could easily just win this one 20-10, hop on the plane, and go home.
