This is a spicy one, ladies and gentlemen. We’ve got two of fantasy football’s premiere mobile quarterbacks at the forefront. Josh Allen will lead the “new look” Buffalo Bills following the trade of star receiver Stefon Diggs. And Kyler Murray returns with breakout tight end Trey McBride as well as the #1 wide receiver and #2 running back taken in the 2024 NFL Draft in Marvin Harrison and Trey Benson.

The stage could be set for fireworks, so we’ll dig into our favorite Cardinals vs. Bills predictions, picks, and odds for this showdown. The fantasy football implications are high and there should be some ways to generate value with our best bet for this week!

Cardinals vs. Bills Predictions For NFL Week 1, Sunday 9/8

Look, not every game is going to be a barnburner. I don’t think folks are expecting the Saints-Panthers game to blow the doors off. Lucky for us though, this one could be one of the good ones.

The over/under is set at 47.5 and, based on the 6.5 point spread in favor of the Bills, our Cardinals vs. Bills predictions will boil down to whether or not we think the Cardinals can keep up their end of the bargain.

Arizona Cardinals: Can Jonathan Gannon Turn Defense Around?

The Arizona Cardinals offense, under Kyler Murray, was honestly not as bad as it could have been last year. In fact, as we detailed in our full write-up on Kyler Murray's upside for fantasy football, the Cardinals were averaging 22.4 points per game when Murray played which was more than the Chiefs and Jaguars and just behind the Texans 22.7. With Trey McBride, Marvin Harrison Jr, and James Conner leading the way, this offense could make some noise.

It’s the defense that is concerning. Jonthan Gannon ran a 4-3 with the Eagles but he has stuck with a 3-4 so far in Arizona based on some personnel he inherited from the previous regime. Some, like ESPN’s Mike Clay, predict the Cardinals defense to be among the worst in the league, if not the worst. Gannon is supposed to be a defensive-minded coach, but you can’t always turn these units around in one year.

Buffalo Bills: Who Steps Up With Stefon Diggs Gone?

That’s the question of the day, right? Who is going to step up with Stefon Diggs gone? He not only vacates ~160 targets per year but nearly ~70 first downs as well. At the end of the day, converting is all that matters in football. Can we convert the first down, can we convert the touchdown. That puts a lot of pressure on tight end Dalton Kincaid as well as rookie Keon Coleman, who they spent the 33rd overall pick on.

On the other side of the ball, the Bills were looking pretty solid despite losing long time safety Jordan Poyer as a cap casualty this off-season. But they recently took a big blow losing All Pro linebacker Matt Milano to a torn bicep. They should still be an above average defense but losing a top coverage linebacker like that could hurt over the middle.

Cardinals vs. Bills Game Total: Over 47.5 (-105 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

All signs in this one point to a shootout. Jonathan Gannon believes that his defense could surprise people this year but that could mean being the 20th best defense instead of dead last. The offense on the other hand is incredibly promising with the mobile Kyler Murray (who is fourth all time of any QB in fantasy points per game) as well as the injection of superstar WR Marvin Harrison

On the Bills offense I believe they have plenty of talent to score - probably at will. It’s up to the Cardinals offense to match them as the run heavy scheme of Joe Brady should have no problem with the Cardinals front. The line for this game actually opened at 48 and got as high as 48.5 before coming down to 47.5 which is odd considering the loss of Matt Milano. This one is setting up to be a fun one.

It’s also worth noting that the NFL moved touchbacks from the 25 to the 30-yard line on kickoffs. The Chiefs opted to give the Ravens the ball at the 30 every time. The Ravens kicked to the Chiefs twice and both were returned past the 30 (one was called back to the 21 via penalty). This could see a trend towards more scoring that I’m not quite sure the lines have adjusted for yet.
