MLB DFS Value Plays May 5: Top DraftKings and FanDuel Picks
We have an 11-game MLB DFS main slate on Friday, May 5th, aka Cinco De Mayo, on DraftKings and FanDuel. We have elite pitching and hitting, so we’re going to have to dig in the value barrel for cheap guys to afford some of the top names such as Ronald Acuna Jr., Paul Goldschmidt, Clayton Kershaw, and Kodai Senga. Let’s dive into some of the top MLB DFS value plays of the day.
MLB DFS Value Pitchers
Bailey Ober, Minnesota Twins
I really like the start Ober has gotten off to this season for the Twins. He’s made two starts and has allowed just two earned runs over his first 11.1 IP with 10 strikeouts and 19.2 DKP in each outing. On Friday, he faces off against a Cleveland Guardians squad that ranks 26th in OPS and wOBA and 29th in ISO against right-handed pitching this season. Ober’s still just 7.2K on DraftKings and that’s a fantastic price point for a guy with 20+ FP upside if he picks up a win here.
Merrill Kelly, Arizona Diamondbacks
For whatever reason, sites continue to give Merrill Kelly absolutely no respect. Kelly’s put up 17+ DKP in three straight games and has posted a 3.06 ERA on the year thus far. He matches up with the Washington Nationals here and is the second-cheapest price point he’s been all year. Against right-handed pitching this year, the Nationals rank 29th in OPS, 28th in wOBA, and 30th in ISO. Kelly and the Diamondbacks have ballooned to -190 favorites tonight.
MLB DFS Value Hitters
Tommy Edman, St. Louis Cardinals
Edman has been fantastic against lefties and like we projected coming into the day, he’s hitting lefty against a southpaw here. Edman’s batting .462 with a .579 wOBA and has three homers against left-handed pitchers. Right-handed hitters are the only split giving Tigers left-hander, Matthew Boyd, any trouble this year, as they’re batting .278 with a .810 OPS and .354 wOBA as well. The top of the Cardinals lineup is very potent and Edman has a lot of run-scoring opportunity here.
Eddie Rosario & Sam Hilliard, Atlanta Braves
It’s hard to choose between the two so let’s pick both, shall we? Rosario has been the better of the two recently notching hits in eight of his last nine games and is batting .306 over his last 10 overall. During that span, he’s hit two doubles, one triple, two home runs, and has driven in eight runs. He’s hitting fifth tonight against Dean Kreamer who’s getting crushed against left-handed bats. They're batting .390 with a 1.090 OPS and .453 wOBA. Speaking of lefties, Sam Hilliard, hitting eighth tonight, has been great against right-handed hurlers too. He’s batting .288 with a .361 wOBA against them in his own right. Both guys are great value options.
Ezequiel Duran, Texas Rangers
The Rangers are getting a LOT from the shortstop position right now despite being without Corey Seager. Duran is slashing .378/.410/.622 over his last 10 games with two home runs, three doubles, and eight runs batted in. He’s hitting .300 against lefties and that was his better split last season as well. Duran’s match-up with Tyler Anderson is fantastic as Anderson’s shown an inability to get right-handed bats out. Righties have a .930 OPS and .398 wOBA to boot.
