MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks May 15
Bryce Harper, Philadelphia Phillies – OVER 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI
Sunday was undoubtedly frustrating for Bryce Harper, who went 0-for-3 at the plate and then got ejected for charging at Colorado Rockies pitcher Jake Bird. Let’s bank on Harper responding positively to that benches-clearing incident with the Philadelphia Phillies starting up a series against the San Francisco Giants. Despite going hitless yesterday, Harper is still hitting .333 with a .973 OPS since returning from injury at the start of May. He had over 1.5 combined hits/runs/RBI in seven of the previous eight games before Sunday. Tonight, Harper will face Giants starter Alex Wood, whom he’s hitting .375 (9-for-24) off of in their careers. Wood likely won’t pitch deep as he’s recently returned from injury, so then it’s the San Fran bullpen and its 5.95 ERA presenting a favorable matchup. Hopefully, Harper’s outburst yesterday ignites the Phillies offense and his own bat starting tonight.
Grayson Rodriguez, Baltimore Orioles – UNDER 5.5 Strikeouts
There’s no denying Grayson Rodriguez’s talent upside as one of the top MLB prospects pitching in the majors this season. Even so, this strikeout line seems a touch too high considering the matchup. The Los Angeles Angels have a middle-of-the-pack 22.6% strikeout rate this season against right-handed pitching (17th-highest in MLB). That K rate has dropped to 21.8% to righties over the past two weeks. It’s basically just an average matchup for opposing pitchers when it comes to strikeouts. As for Rodriguez, he’s gone under 5.5 strikeouts in only three of seven starts this year but he’s notched just three and four Ks in the past two outings. When looking at some of his higher K performances, it’s important to note that two came against the Detroit Tigers and one against the Oakland Athletics – both strikeout-prone offenses. The Angels should present a more formidable challenge for Rodriguez, like his last two lower-K outings vs Tampa Bay and Kansas City.
Other MLB Underdog Picks:
- Ketel Marte, Arizona Diamondbacks – OVER 0.5 Singles
- Michael Wacha, San Diego Padres – UNDER 4.5 Strikeouts
