We have a 10-game MLB slate on Thursday which means we have a great opportunity to build our bankrolls on Underdog Fantasy

This slate looks good for targeting a number of pitchers – how long they go and how many strikeouts they rack up. We’ll focus our attention on St. Louis Cardinals starter Sonny Gray for the whiffs and both Bailey Falter for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Javier Assad of the Chicago Cubs for the distance… or maybe lack thereof.

Sonny Gray Underdog MLB Pick: Higher Than 7 Strikeouts

How can you not be a fan of Sonny Gray and his strikeout totals today? He’s gone higher than seven strikeouts in each of his last two starts and in five of his last eight. His 12.16 K/9 is a career-best mark right now and all of his peripherals indicate he’s pitching even better than his numbers indicate.

The Rockies are a lost team, especially outside of Coors Field and now they’re on the road to St. Louis with a 25.3-percent strikeout rate over the past seven days. Working even more in our favor is their 25.8-percent K-rate against righthanded pitching this season. Even their best hitter against righties is fanning almost 20-percent of the time, so there shouldn’t be much concern over the Rockies bats.

Bailey Falter Underdog MLB Pick: Lower Than 15.5 Pitching Outs

After battling both Jared Jones and Paul Skenes over the last two days, Bailey Falter is going to look like a little leaguer to these Dodgers bats. They may have lost yesterday, but they got to Skenes early and then blew up the Pirates bullpen. They have the second-highest wOBA (.346) against lefthanded pitching this season and that comes with a .172 ISO, so the power is prevalent.

Falter may have a 3.22 ERA on the season, but we’ve seen him live up to his name against the tougher lineups. It’s been five starts since he’s gone lower than 15.5 outs, but the Dodgers bats should work the count on him, hit him around a little and drive up that pitch-count. And the career .338 wOBA lefties are hitting him with makes me salivate over the likes of Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman.

Javier Assad Underdog MLB Pick: Lower Than 16.5 Pitching Outs

Assad has been a surprisingly strong pitcher at the back end of this Cubs rotation and the 2.27 ERA has been fantastic. However, Assad has gone lower than 16.5 outs in each of his last three games and in four of his last five. The pitch-counts are being driven up and now that he’s in Great American Smallpark against a team he just faced, I’m concerned about his longevity.

The Reds chased Assad in his last outing after recording just 16 outs and now he gets them coming off a fantastic stretch in Colorado. In fact, the Reds have won five of their last six games and averaged just over seven runs per game in that span. Can’t blame it all on Coors when Cincinnati’s park ain’t much different.
